what to do???

Here is my issue, I just singed up with this site because I'm a mechanic at
a chrysler dealership and I dont know jack about v-tech. I like my d17, its just that v-tech doesnt kick in till I'm damn near at red line. I've read about the k20 swap, but I cant afford the 220hp setup and supposedly the base engine puts out 5 less horse that my d17. With what I've done to it so far at this elevation my civic runs about 16.5's, my friend has a stock 03 ex and she runs 17.3's on average. Is there any way I can tweak the v-tech without having to buy a controller???? I've taken out the cat cause montana has no emissions, 2.25 catback and a short-ram instake with a 4-1 header. Or for that matter, what can I do to keep my 1.7L and bring my times down to low 15's. I dont need to go to fast, I've got a bike for that. I just want to slap all the muscle in this town around a bit. Any info what so ever is greatly appreciated. Must make gen 7 faster!!!!!!
Thanks a lot,
Tibor

From now on its vtec. And in the d17 it hits really low, that's why you dont hear changover. The ONLY WAY to alter changover is with a vtec controller. But with that said ive heard that raising the vtec crossover is also not a smart idea. You can build a decent NA with crower cams and pistons of your desire but (you will need) an EMS. You could also opt for boost, beside's it being expensive as hell you'll also need a full tuned EMS. Basically the D17 is stuborn for power. Although theres a quicker way to force power and maybe the cheapest. Nitrous. So to answer your question. You can not tweak VTEC without a controller.

Ah, I see. I kinda figured that the d17 was gona be a pain, I think the fact that its a c.o.p. ignition setup has a lot do to with it. I was just redundantly wishing there was an easy way out. I havent been able to find any cams for it, I know there are adjustable cam gears, aluminum crank pulleys and thats about it. Thanks for your advise, I appreciate it a lot.

get some lighter rims, rip out the A/C, if you got a 5 speed get the revo short shifter, take out the spare tire and any other added weight you can live without...that should quicken the ride a little

crower is the only company making cams right now. As far as ignition check out AEM they have some stuff you might be interested in.
