Get a Helm's manual first. Read the whole engine chapter. The DIY.

Like snowboreddave said, if you dont know how to take the crank out, you shouldnt even be touching the engine. taking out the crank is a pretty straight forward job. You remove the main caps, then remove the rod caps, remove the rods and pistons, and out comes the crank.

Really if you are not sure how to do it then start on some thing like a lawn mower engine. Or some thing wont cost alot of money when you make simple mistakes. Cause you will make them we all have. What exactly are you trying to do?? Maybe then we can help further. But if all you are doing is rebuilding it then I would say go to a shop. But if you insist on doing it your self then read a engine manual over and over till you get a mental picture and a game plan for your build up.

do not try to pull the crank out especially since you thought it just "unhooked or something"

I have been working or cars for along time now and certain things I leave to the pros like engine building. If your a dead set on doing this your self then I suggest you get educated on every single part and its function. Not to sound mean or any thing but just so that the basic idea of how it all works wont be a burdon. Every thing that goes in the motor has to be within spec and if your are going for more power then it has to be even closer. Try to imagine 500 steps of measuring fitting and re fitting and measuring till its all right. Cause if one thing is off by any amount at 7300 rpm you will find out when you are scooping parts of your motor off the ground with a shovel. Thats why I suggest getting your feet wet with some thing that does not require alot of money and know how. Any way hope it helps.

I have no reason to rip that thing out, and even if I did I am pretty sure it slips right out, dont even have to open your hood!

just so you know, to do it right, you have to have the head off and the transmission out.

To do it half assed, you still need the transmission out.

you will need the hood open to pull the engine. Realize that you have to unplug and unbolt everything on top of the engine as well as underneath the car. It can come out from the bottom or top, probably easier from the bottom.
