D17A9 Tuing
I've just bought a 02 Civic coupe with the D17A9 engine (125bhp). I'm wanting to get some more power out of the engine - beside the obvious breathing mods (induction and exhaust) that sould take it up to about 130ish, what else can I do to that this engine responds well to? 150bhp would be a nice target. I'm not rich, so big mods like turbos aren't an option - I want to keep it NA anyway.

^^^Replace ground wires and add a Hyper Voltage system. I would honestly do things like short shifter and work on suspension not engine. Cause you can get a lot out of tweaking our suspension, but you can spend a fortune on engine mods and make far less than 150... That's my .02

Rep Power: 0 How does modding his suspension give him more power. It *might help the car jolt forward faster.. kind of as effective as motor bushing.. they help too, but not as a primary source for power gains.. then again this is OUTSIDE of i/h/e..lol.
IMO: Look at things with scrutiny.. (for example) the clubrsx.com forums have dynos for their intakes.. that a good starting place to find qaulity parts and then make a decision on price there after..
Little things like shortening the throttle cable is supposed to help.. upgraded spark plugs.. basically: If you aren't opening or smoothing out the air, then you are smoothing out how other parts perform.. when most or all things run smoothly you can beat a 'better car' since you are less prone to resistance.

Rep Power: 334 i think to actually get 150 WHEEL hp with just "breathing" mods is impossible. it might be possible if you get dynoed on a really "loose" dyno.
I think the D17 Needs some serious internal block mods (like cams) and heavy tuning to squeeze 150 whp out of it.

Rep Power: 0 I'm not hoping to get 150 out of breathing - I'm not a moron. I want mod suggestions APART from breathing. I have considered cams, but don't you have to sacrifice torque for power and vica-versa?
Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to spend pennies, I'm gonna put a fair bit of money into it, just not down the turbo route.

Rep Power: 0 You would rather torque than hp. You alter the powerband. You get less power in the lowend, and more in the high end. i/h/e wont do anything for our cars. If you want some power, get the i/h/e and some nitrous. Spray a 35 shot, and that will get you some good power over stock. Only run about 800 bucks for all that as well. maybe a couple hundred more for gauges (which are needed)

here are some ideas. swap out a d16y8 manifold and do cam and valve springs. use an safc and have it dyno tuned. Stage 1 clutch and an aluminum flywheel is a huge difference also. Make sure you use a long tube 4-2-1 header with a high flow cat or no cat if you drop the cam in. as far as an intake goes if you get a cam use an SRI, it will accent the better top end many people here will probably disagree on this one but ive messed with intakes enough to know what works. Call Brian Crower for a recommendation on a good custom cam for what you are planning to do.

Rep Power: 296 We already have a ton of torque with these motors considering comparisons to the prev sohc. Having experience with a ton of d17 mods I have found you really wont lose a ton of low end torque unless you go extreme. Such as a cam with a long *** duration.

I/E/H- Those mods do near to nothing, especially considering how much they cost!!! Our engines come pretuned. Donot waste your money on intake, exhaust, headers, unless you wanna go with nitrous. Even then if you get the nitrous, you may not be satsified because the power is limited. So after spending all that money you could have saved it toward a swap or turbo.

Gah, I'm only familiar with the D16v1, which is a slighty more restrictive head perched on a standard D17 gut. D17A9 though.....don't know, I would imagine it's pretty much the same thing. The only differences will probably be in the transmission and head. Everything for a USDM D17 should bolt right up.
