Talking Project: Hater-aid

Yeh, I am an idiot. But I want to see just what an all engine D17A2 can do before I boost it.

Someone Tell me what I can expect from all this....

Ported / Polished Junkyard D17A2 head if I can find one
I also want to have the intake manifold machined a little bit to allow more airflow.

Je Pistons (decent brand? I don't know much about them)

Crower Stage2 Camshaft
Crower All Motor Rods
Crower Valvtrain Kit

(I need some retainers and springs?)
(I need some bigger injectors)
AEM Cold Air Intake
AEM High Volume Fuel Rail
AEM Tru Power Pulley's
AEM Tru Time Cam Sprocket

DC Sprts 4-2-1 Race Headers

Greddy EVO2 Catback Exhaust

Apexi V-AFCII

ACT Clutch, Flywheel, Pressure plate (suggestions?)

JDM DC2 Rims ( if i can find some)

Tires - I don't know....

Someone Tell me if I am wasting money or not here.
I am NOT going to do a swap.. I don't want to.

I don't see turbo coming for at least 2 years.
I can do engine work now. If I can get 40hp out of it, I'll be happy.

Like I care, but if I go through with this.. Will I be the laughing stock on the forums?

Please advise.

Your wasting your money if you wanna go turbo in the end because you will need to change everything. Put even if you build this all motor it will most likely be as fast as a turbo Vic on 8 psi

if you plan to add high compression pistons now, you will have to run either factory or low compression pistons down the road when you plan to boost. my advice is to save up and run a basic 7psi turbo setup on a stock motor. its the only real way to make power out of the d17 for the money invested.

Ok I found my Wheels and Tires -
Konig Next Bronze 15x7 wrapped in Nitto NT450 - P205/50R-15 84V
or
Enkei RS6 Silver 16x7 wrapped in Nitto NeoGen VR - 205/40R - 16 83V BLK or
Nitto NT 450 P205/55R-16 89V

Michalo187 - I really don't care to turbo unless I see absolutely NO results from engine tuning. I think it'd be fun to all motor a 01 Civic with D17.

Think I can pull 150 at the wheels?
That'd be enough to have ALOT of fun around town in hehe.
I probably will just run it in the bracket races here a few times to see what it does.

I have to drive several hours to Dyno the thing when it comes to it.

So I have decided to go motor..
BTW - this is going to be almost all go and no show...
I want the car to look as stock as possible except for a little wheel tire and suspension

keeping the car a sleeper is sweet. thats what i'm doing. a turbo is not the asnwer for everything. all motor is the way to go. i'm putting a turbo on my ride LAST. besides the custom licence plate the turbo is last. i would respect a n/a car with mods and good hp than a turbo car. its like owning a v8. hp is easy on that crap. its a challenge to pump hp out of a SOHC 1.7 liter engine. thats what its about to me anyway. turbo is too easy and expensive.

only other thing you are forgetting would be a bored out throttle body. since the engine will actually be making some significant power (like over 150hp) then our stock tb isnt going to cut it most likely. can't hurt if nothing else.

Don't waste your time with the D17 intake manifold. Go with a 6th gen D16 Venom model and get it to work for you. You'll need to go with a return fuel system then, but you said you wanted to boost in a few years so this would be a good choice. Cold air, fuel rail and injectors would come over with the 6th gen intake swap.

The cower valvetrain kit is the springs and retainers, in titanium.

LMAO. All motor on our d17 can only go so far...and thats not far at all. Also, you talk about all motor like its a few hundred dollars. You'd have to pay twice the price of a turbo system to have 30-40 HP less than a turbo would make. Keep dreaming.

You should get 40WHP! After my first round of internals if I don't hit 134WHP than i'll keep on modding untill I get above 140. Good luck to ya!

Umm....If you want to make respectable hp you might as well do the turbo first. Then build nething internal afterwards. It seems to make more sense to me anyway. Unless it's winter or you have a spare car to use!!!! But good luck trying to go all motor!

With the more agressive cam setup are you also thinking of getting ITBs?

For lightwheight flywheels I wouldn't go ultra light, somthing sreetable. I'd spend a lil extra and go for a chromoly flywheel.

Ohh and yeah when I finally get my hands on an A2 head, i'm going with the Crower Stage 3 cam with some serious compression - probably not ITBs because thats a biatch to tune with SOH's!

Well,

I have found a wrecked 01 Civic...I can get the whole engine really cheap.
I'm going to just tune the engine that I pick out of a car that got the rear end crushed.

I really don't care how much it costs... by the time I finish piecing together the new spowerplant, everything else will be gone, and it will drop right in sort of.

I agree about the bored out throttle body. I don't know why I didn't mention that.

Go with a 6th gen D16 Venom model and get it to work for you. You'll need to go with a return fuel system then, but you said you wanted to boost in a few years so this would be a good choice. Cold air, fuel rail and injectors would come over with the 6th gen intake swap.

Welding will be required for tyhe D16 Venom part, correect?
So then I need a 6th Gen Cold Air Intake, Fuel Rail, and all that.

Next Week I'm going to try and do my wheel and tire goodies.
Or at lease order them.

Then I will take pics.

Thanks so much guys

woo now you guys are talking money.. ITB will cost about as much as a turbo kit won't it?

Do you knnow the PArt# for a Venom Intake Manifold ?D16 ?

Lets say I get ALL this tuned to perfection...
I can probably expect something in the 130-140whp , right? I know there is a significant drop in power at the crank when it gets to the wheels.

If you're going to be doing all this and want to realise signifigant gains, I might also recommend a standalone ECU to help better tune things. I think a few people on this board are using the AEM EMS to manage their turbos, look around.

Agreed -

Im not really thinking about turboing as much as building a motor.
Alot of my friends are into engines and can help me alot.

Stand Alone ECu eh? That work for All Engine as well ?
Im not half as interested in turbo charging the car as doing internal engine upgrade / mods

FYI - I am going to myspace my build.. lol.
all pics and info will be available on my myspace.com account (which will be posted when needed)

motor build

haha YEHA MAN JOIN THE CHAIR FORCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
sorry im navy so i had to laugh at you

FACT! in a study of gays in the military 68% were marines, less than 4% were navy so KISS MY *** **** TALKERS

SQUID LIFE

anyways yeah im all about the d17 all motor, im well on my way

I went with race engineering pistons, ( took a lill overbore to fit)
crower rods,
had the crank really knife edged
whole rotating assembly balanced
crower stage 2's
crower springs and retainers
crappy header that turned blue in 3 min but was an awesome bling bling gold before that.
i bored the TB
Stock intake manifold
aem v2
clutch masters stage 2 clutch
clutch master chromoly flywheel
magnaflow full catback
aem ture time cam gear
port and polished head ( local shop)
this setup made 163.4 whp ( ran that with 16's) drive with 17's
i need to upgrade to the 6th gen intake manifold
need a new motor mount after i ripped the old one apart on the dynojetYOU NEED ENERGY INSERTS !!!!!!!
the d17 sounds like a beast when build, im happy, and with some tunign ill be very very happy
BTW i spent less than 2000 on the motor itself ( way cheaper than turbo and still streetable imo)

Also i didnt note any problems with the fuel system it seemed to be fine
