install vtec controller
install vtec controller
Dear all,
I have a 2001 model civic and would like to install the controller on my car. I hope that you can help me to understand this equipment, Is it worth to have it ? do its function well to open the vtec earlier with this controller?
I have a question that the original setting of vtec is open at 5000rpm ( somebody told me, but I have not open it ). With this controller, I can open the vtec earlier and it is good to do it.
too much questions, but I have no way to know it, hope you can help me.
your reply would be highly appreciated, thanks in advanced

bwong I replied in GR.
However to sum it up quickly here:
The APEXi VAFC will not work with the 2001 Civic.
It was made for the B16/D16, not the D17A2. Someone on this forum has already tryed to no success, search to find the thread. Jandree, VTEC engagement in an 2k1 EX is 4600, however in my 99 Si it is 5600 (higher redline) however my VAFC kicks it in at 4500rpm.

I though i read somewhere that our vtec opens at 3000 and closes at 2500 +-.
I will personally check this on mine. That's why you won't feel vtec kicking in.
As far as VAFC, this thing has two purposes: 1st, control vtec engagement point, 2nd adjust fuel settings in different rpm points. The vtec engagement point feature-doesn't work!!!(at leats for now)
Fuel correction is cool!

well actually they do work for the 2k1 they just have to be properly tuned by a professional our engines arent new engines the d series engine is similar to the 88-91 model so yes the do work but only if tuned right

No Actually they do not work on our cars. It has something to do with the EPROM chip. For some reason,
you are not able to over ride the VTEC engagement point on a 2k1 civic. That came straight from the R&D dept. of
APEX' i in Cali. The VTEC engage/disengage points are the only thing that you can not mess with on our cars.
Now I am full satisfied that if you re chipped your car, then you would be able to do whatever you wanted.
I feel as thought that the aftermarket companies took this same secnerio in mind when designing the A/M Chips.
I know you all are going to hate to hear this but the vtec on our cars does not kick on at a preset point. The computer decides when to engage it based on a few factors such as engine temp, TPS reading, oil pressure and vehicle speed. there are other factors also, these are just a few. Even if you are at 6000 rpm in first gear but your engine is too cold and your throttle isnt open far enough vtec will not kick in. sorry.
mine kick is in at 4200,,,4300 every time........01 ex coupe......if u floor the car a couple of times and stare at the tac it jumps alittle right there ..............2k1E.....we do not have the i-vtec where it changes all the time

Man theres no way to tell when it opens or closes by "feel"
the only way is to install a bulb or with a multi meter, or with a vafc(at leat for one try before the ck engine light comes on). The car does feel good about 4000 - 4500 but, that's not when the vtec opens. Go ahead, put a vtec light into that green and yellow wire, and you'll see that it opens earlier than that!

i have a super afc vtec controller on my integra and i think that the SAFC was only made for B series motors not for the d17... and vtec hits at 4400
thats true... you cant feel the vtec kick in in the 2k1civic, i can actually hear mine click in our GSR... if you really wanna know when vtec is hitting, try installing a vtec light... i have one in our 99 GSR ... all it is is a tapped wire from the ECU connected to an LED... there really is no initial setting for when the vtec is supposed to hit because it all depends on the temp. of the engine and all that... im currently installing one in my civic, which is kinda hard to do considering the location of the freakin ECU... but its okay... ill find a way!
i have a 2k2 civic and i installed the vafc.. i have mine set up to 4800 after second gear while racing im popping vtec all the way through the race.. by the way they do work on our cars.. theres a thread around here showing the fix.. you have to connect the vtm wire.. the apexi diagram is wrong
