Im having a huge debate is it even worth putting any money into the engine/exhaust or such?
right now im all show no go and im not feeling the whole modding internals w/ the 1.7 i have a 2001 LX coupe.

i've had the i/h/e done and now my baby is boosted there is no replacement for displacement on our 1.7's. it will give better low end torque and a nice throaty sound but there is no real gains from bolt on's.

Yeah... if I still had my civic and it was out a warranty, I would go nitrous for some cheap speed.
But yeah, although I think you can get more than 5hp, probably not much more than 10 though. Some claim to have gotten 15 and have dynos to prove it, but I forgot who that was. But even 15 more hp is going to give you any real speed.

If you seriously want to get some power out of your car. Then keep it stock for now and save for a swap. If you have to have some power now go n20 and you can always use it when you swap.
First I would really like to know what NAWS is? I know what NOS means though.
Anyway, Nitrous is just as bad as a turbo, but your not using it all the time, even when your not in boost a turbo will still add heat to the motor, nitrous is either on or off. Both can cause detonation. Nitrous is just cheaper and easier to sell when when you get board with it. Ger a 50 shot and call it a day. Remamber, Full exhaust and a intake costs the same or more than a wet kit, but instead of gaining 5 or 10 hp, you get 55-65 or 75. You choose! And one more thing, Honda does not warranty motors that have damage from any type of power adder. Just my 2 cents.

this is getting tiring but lets beat the dead horse some more. what are your goals? racing or some extra power? racing nitrous or turbo or swap. extra power for a DD just get the bolt ons. i don't see why a DD would want nitrous. if you have the money get a swap or just don't do anything and get a faster car.

after that you can look into internals and stroking or boring your cylinders. blueprinting your motor, flow-testing and and all that.
i mean, it really all depends on what youre looking for and how much you want to spend to get it and if you want to stay w/ the d17 and get the satisfaction of getting all you can out of it or going for a swap.

^^^Yeah... that might help a little. I know a Mustang 5.0 throttle body fit a D16, not sure about the D17 though. And a new manifold isn't a bad idea either; I'm not sure how good that goofy thing you have is. If you want more low end though, stay away from intakes too, most of them actually shift the power band up a little, same with most exhaust systems. Try putting in a better cat (random technology worked well for me and Dezod has them at a good price) and less restrictive muffler. Don't increase the size of the tubing though, don't get larger diameter exhaust manifolds, all these will shift power up too.
So better throttle and cat and you may see a couple more ft-lb. If I still had a civic, this is probably what I would do. Then go to a new intake manifold. I would like to see a civic with those mods with out an larger diameter exhaust and intake and see how it would far against these others with i/h/e.
