tech: tie bar stresses?
fyi, i just got a dc tie bar.
can someone tell me what kind of forces this bar is designed to take. the tie bar attaches to teh rear control arms. the best way i can describe it is in relation to the two bolts which attach the tie bar to the control arms. is the tie bar meant to resist, the distance between these two bolts decreasing or increasing? or is it meant to resist an entirely different force? if you can't understand my question i'll photoshop a pic of the bar with a description of what i'm talking about. thanks

The lower rear tie bar is meant to keep the length between the lower rear control arms the same while cornering, and to transfer lateral motion from one side of the car to the other. For example, when you take a hard right turn, your drivers side rear wheel gets pushed towards the center of the car, while your passenger side rear wheel gets pushed to the right outside of the car. If you take the turn hard enough, then your entire rearend will slip out from under you, towards the left side of the car. The tie bar will keep the wheels from being pushed too much, so that way you can keep the rear end under control better. It's really just a piece of metal designed to bolt on to the car, to give that part of the car more inherit strength, to keep that part of the chassis from flexing as much as it does without the tie bar.
If this makes no sense, then maybe someone else can explain it better.
PS, in my sig is a link to my members ride section, there's a pic of my lower rear tie bar there.

great explanation. so it keeps the control arms the same distance. thanks alot
i was playing with the bar and noticed that it doesn't have the bushings that are on the strut bar so left mount point on the tie bar kinda moves like a joystick. but that doesn't matter because it does not give at all lengthwise(obviously).
