VTEC / ECU wire gauge?

I thought the easiest way to bust into car modification was to tackle the almighty VTEC indicator light. But before you all jump down my throat because it's useless, etc., try to answer my one question:

Does anyone know the gauge (AWG) of the VTEC wire coming from the ECU? I suspect that all of the wires are the same guage, but I'm not quite ready to buy a dial caliper or special wire gauge measuring tool before asking. Ask first, pay later, that's what I always say (read that any way you like).

The reason I need to know is because Radio Shack tap splices are pieces of garbage, so I'm going to buy some nice 3M ones, but they come in a variety of sizes (that's a good thing) and I need to know the AWG range to get.

If nobody knows, I will happily buy a $5 dial caliper and do some measuring on my own (and post the results of course). I would suspect that anyone who has tapped any line from the ECU should know this.

I thought I read somewhere that it was 18, but I'm not sure where that information came from. In any case, I bought these Radio Shack piece of GARBAGE wire taps that are supposedly made for 18AWG and a spool of 18AWG wire, and I could hardly cram the wire in there. So that made me very, very wary of screwing with my actual ECU line, knowing that I would have to mash it into the tap with a screwdriver and even then only be 50% sure it would work.

I'm never shopping there again. That's the third time I've said that, but I mean it this time!

I'm not much of a soldering maven. I freely and willingly admit that I've only soldered a few times in my life.

Here's a question that's more automotive oriented... If I clipped that line, would VTEC stop working, or is it only a sensor? I was under the impression that it was the line that sent power to the actual VTEC solenoid, in which case I'm even more wary of getting into deep water messing with it.

A monkey could use a wire tap.
