making a dx vtec
but it can make a difference when down at the quarter mile... i have 2 identical cars except one is vtec and one is non... did quarter mile on my dx at 17.34 at its best... then did the same with the ex and got 16.8 at best... so in track time it makes a difference... on the long run like street driving to me it doesnt make a difference

Yeah but if your going to do a swap. Go through all that trouble; Wouldn't it be worth it to save the extra $$$ and go k20? Even if you don't wanna fork out the money for the k20a2, the k20a3 goes for $1,500 on ebay. The d17a2 goes for $700. I don't know. Just wondering that's all

u guys are talking about much more time and money to go to a k20....
if you want vtec, you need an ex ecu to control it, meaning you need it coded for your key as well. you need an 01-04 D17A2 head, with the VTEC solenoid...
my suggestions... I love VTEC and should be added if your going all motor, but not yet. If you haven't already, instead of spending a grand on a VTEC setup, buy some mods. Buy an intake, cat-back, header, shortshifter and clutch. Those mods will make a much better difference than VTEC conversion. Then from there get the thing dyno tuned. You want to do VTEC last, when there's nothing else to do.
I could name so much more to do but I'm damn tired.

Stock LX motor without v-tec...115 hp...stock ex motor with V-tec...127 hp...add a bunch of mods and the v-tec motor is way ahead of the non vtec...not sure if it would beat an engine swap though...i bought my car with v-tec becuase it is my daily driver...

dont know how ur redline is different for each gear.. in my dx it redlines 6800 in all gears... except i havent redlined it in 4th and 5th yet... second of all has anyone done a head swap yet or does anyone have the wiring diagram

I put a D17A2 (EX) in place of my blown LX motor, and i didn't see a big differnce proformance wise between the two motors. exept for the V-tec of the EX is kinda cool. the main reason i think the EX has more power is in its exhaust.
did anyone read my post i did earlier... it said """but it can make a difference when down at the quarter mile... i have 2 identical cars except one is vtec and one is non... did quarter mile on my dx at 17.34 at its best... then did the same with the ex and got 16.8 at best... so in track time it makes a difference... on the long run like street driving to me it doesnt make a difference""" but i have both cars and drive both of em so i like driving my ex mroe cause it has more pull for it
I know you probably aren't looking to fork out the extra cash to do a k20 swap, and I know personally that I like my EX Sedan more than I like my LX Coupe because you can feel the v-tec kick in. My moto is go big or go home, so go all out if you want that extra goodness, and don't be stingy when it comes to money, it is everywhere to be made.
oh well..i thought i would bump this thread back up cause i finally did it.. and without the ecu.. go here

yup.. i originally posted it here in 7th gen.. then someone PMed me and told me i should put it up in honda tech so that way they can see that there are people out there who do work on our EM2's
u know what... its running great... my friend has an ex with the same boltons as i do... and also running a VAFC2... now when i run him my vtec kicks in harder than his and mines is louder.. almost like how a DOHC would sound... kinda in between the sound of his vtec and a DOHC vtec.. i ran at the tracks 16.9 with my non-vtec motor... next week imma head out there and get some times with my vtec on and VAFC2.. hopefully i can get it tuned before then
