DIY: Ported exhaust manifold gasket
i just found something out. I put on my pnp head and it felt like I lost power. I was confused and upset. Did not have time to dyno so I just drove around w/ the lost power. I was really bumbed out. Even got beat by a 1.8T VW
Well I finally did some tuning and guess what. I was running too rich. The ports on the head were so big I lost air. So I needed less fuel not more. It is like someone explained: blow into a straw and feel the air. now get a 3" pipe and blow hard. You will barely feel the air. So I leaned her out alot and bam my power was back. Did not dyno just tuned of O2 sensor. Will dyno soon and post results. I hope I gained power. I also put in my DH-Cam. It is actually a WEB Cam. They did a regrind for higher lift and longer duration. For those interested it looks like only the exhaust side was larger. I guess to make use of the huge exhaust ports on the head.
I will let you know.. BTW I am boosted. But imagine if huge exhaust ports made a boosted car rich, image what it would do to a NA car.
Good luck to all on your projects.

So that means I'm running VERY rich then. My ports are also big like yours, which I thought would be really good for turbo because of all the forced air. Strange that it's not like that. I don't think I feel power loss, but who knows.
Let us know what happens, because it's hard to believe. I know rscivic had huge problems, but her head was milled alot for turbo.

I put in my DH-Cam and it gained power after 5,000rpm. That would be great but that means I only have power for 1800rpm.
I took it to H-townboys shop and the owner told me the only way to make use of the head would be to use 3" piping for the turbo and downpipe, upgrade the turbo to something that would flow more air t3/t4.
I am still waiting for my DH block. If it comes and its good, I guess I will be upgrading my turbo. Hopefully that will make it worth the extremely ported head.

Nope it's still on. I don't think performance went down. I'm getting the header jet coated next year too, and hopefully dyno tune.

Only other mods I have is header and rear section exhaust. I don't feel much difference, but it needs tuning. I can feel the uneven rpm band as it's accelerating. But yeah the auto sucks.
