Need help ASAP - 1.7L noise

Hey Civic people,

I just joined the site today because I'm looking at getting into a Civic while gas prices are *** high (I currently drive a Crown Vic). I know nothing aboot Civics, but I'm trying to learn.

Yesterday, I test drove a 2001 1.7L manual with 106k miles on the clock, and there is a very good price on it. I'd like to buy it, but I have a question that I was hoping somebody would be able to answer.

When I drove it around, the engine would make a weird whirring/clicking noise at mid- to high-rpm. My only guess is that a new timing chain or tensioner is needed. Does anyone know anything aboot this problem, or what it could be?

Just to clarify:

This is a totally stock 2001 Civic, and I intend to keep it that way for a while. The main reason for me to buy it is to save myself the trouble of filling up with $40 of gas every week, or twice a week when I'm busy.

I wouldnt suggest getting a car with over 100k miles...... I'm sure for a little bit more $ you can buy a car that has less wear on the engine. I would guess that 01 Civic with the 106k miles is worth about 6-7 grand..... for like 8k or 9k you can get the same 2001 Civic with half the miles and warrenty. Just a suggestion.

damn, that's a gas guzzler allright.

I would steer away from an '01 with 100k miles on it though....personally, I would want a less driven vehicle. but that's just my opinion.

106k miles put on since 2001 has got to be all highway miles. Not to mention, it's a frickin Honda. I'm not worried aboot the engine dying anytime soon.

I can't afford more than US$8000, and I don't want any mods. I want gas mileage. Thanks for the offer though.

Well the timing belt needs replacing if you buy the car. But don't get a civic just for gas mileage. I only get 25mpg and my car is stock engine-wise. You're better off with a hybrid or even civic HX.

Another suggestiom.... if you cant afford a car liek a civic with lower milege then try to get a 6thgen civic with lower miles. Somethign in the range of 1997-00. Those vics were built better then the vic 01+.... tahst atleast what I think after reading all the stuff on these boards.

zen_master is on a distinguished road
try to stay away from 01 with high mileage...

why? cos 01 is the first product of 7thgencivic.....more problems inside...

save some more, buy something "younger"

LOL, its funny to read what some of you people have to say.

"Uh, my engine had no oil in it and then I hit redline in 5th and it made noises and now my car doesn't run. Anybody know what this could be?"

Well if you redline the car all the time, you're gonna need a valve adjustment.

Just test drove it. No strange noises or malfunctions. I'm gonna check the VIN with CarFax and see if anything comes up. I know it was in an accident, the guy selling it has replaced a fender and a headlight (he said he replaced the hood, but the hood had the car's VIN on it ???). Needs new tires and possibly a new hood latch. Chicago car. $7995. What do you guys think?
