Spark Plugs, WTF

so i hit 40000km yesterday (24854 miles), and the weather was amazing today, so i decided to change my spark plugs to Bosch Platinium. easy job, but the Stock Sparks are sooo rusted. Is this normal for only 40 000 ? i mean the dealership only says to change them every 80 000km. so is it my driving or is it that the OEM plugs are crap ?

Dude, look a the tips. Those look burnt - as in either your car was running too lean, or your running too hot of a plug.....maybe try one grade cooler plug.

Bad plugs can reduce gas mileage. Mine were bad at 18K, all black. I suspect the car is running rich because of all the carbon. Good thing I'm getting it tuned soon.

Spark plug analysis. This should help determine why the plug is fouling.

The ceramic on the base is brown, its burned. Look at the electrode (the part that goes into the engine). Take some clear pictures of those. Most likely if it was just that plug you may have had a bad plug. If the electrode is worn down pretty good, and the white ceramic surrounding the electrode is fscked up pretty good than you may either running lean in that cylinder, or the plug is crap.

Also, the plugs have had a good amount of time to sit in that aluminum head. and aluminum rusts . So here is was you should do. Ask for some spark plug compound that helps it resist in rusting, that way it is easier to pull next time.

uh, look under your hood. see any white "spots" on any of the aluminum fittings. That is oxidization. Also known as "rust"

Those spark plugs look fine. They looked burned, because they are. Why? Its in the combustion chamber. Duh. What happens in a combustion chamber? Fire. If the car is lean, it will be a lighter shade of brown. Rich, darker black. speckled usually means detonation. Also a statement like: "dont buy bosch, theyre a european company, and putting that in an import car is bad" is completely and utterly retarded. If its a european company, wouldnt that have to be imported too?! just like a BMW is an import. Its a european import not a japanese import. Since when have only asian cars been considered imports? And generally "Rust" as its called, is oxidized Iron (III). Also known as iron oxide. Aluminum oxide is not generally called rust in any sense of the term. Granted it is a similar chemical reaction. http://news-service.stanford.edu/new...minum-517.html has some good info about it.
