Honda OEM Brake Pads

Hello !

I got some Honda OEM brake pads i'm gonna change out today.

My question is I got a Packet of what seems to be graphite lubricant with the brake pads
the only thing it says on it is "NOTE MAY CAUSE TEMPORARY EYE DIS COMFORT"

Well I had no intention of sticking it in my Eye, but what the heck am I suppose to do with it ???

Do those sqeek at all? I have come kevlar break pads for the low dust charactoristics because of my chrome rims but the stopping power feels about the same as the OEM pads.

hey if you could tell me how to get the rear drums off that would be great. From changing before on other cars there is usually a place where you screw in bolts and it pops off. Now there is a place for 2 bolts to be screwed in, but they are not on the drum like in other applications that I have delt with. Any information would be great

Smack it with a hammer a few times and the cover will pop right off. There's nothing holding it together. Don't smack too hard or you'll bend/crack the cover. Just give it some taps to break the rust loose, and it'll come right off.

The lube is usually only needed if your pads squeal when you drive or apply pressure to the pedal. I personally won't put it on unless that does occur, don't like the idea of anything being there to decrease stopping power if needed in a pinch. (open tracking and autocross in particular)

Well , i just finished, I didn't use it.

Took some pictures, I'm going to try to make a DIY today or tommorow.

About the rear Drum , I always go to a local rental shop and rent what is called a drum remover , It looks like a big two finger claw, it grips the cover on both sides, then has a bolt in the middle that you screw down and it pops off the cover. Works great !!! was real cheap to rent also. i'm sure it doesn't cost much to buy either.

sorry

Dr5d.. I just got OEM brake pads, usually I'll just get pep Boy specials and replace them every 20,000 or as needed,

But i purchased the maintance contract through the dealer, they change all the oil up to 36000 miles, and a bunch of coupons,

one of the coupons was for free brakes pads.
All it said was labor not included, It didn't say I HAD TO PAY TO HAVE THEM INSTALLED
So i went to the dealer, and complained until they just gave me the pads, didn't take long! and saved me $64 for pads !!

I've gone through 2 sets of EBC Green stuff. They rarely squeak and have a substancial low dust factor compared to stock pads. And if you go to the dealer for OEM pads,(60+) you can get EBC's for 63 shipped to your door. Not a bad deal if your willing to pay the 20 bux over "Auto Zone or Pep Boys" pads...

The green turns to black quick though =)
EBC's also bite harder than stock...Big increase with slotted rotors. How about the kevlar? do they bite hard?

You dont need to turn the rotor or replace when just replacing the pads. You should replace the rotor when its becoming very thin(you can usually tell when its unusually thin) and have them rotated when they become uneven and you feel a vibration when breaking. At least this is what ive been told

You should turn your rotors every time you replace your pads. You should replace your rotors if they are beyond the recommended thickness, or if they are cracked. If you warped them and are getting vibration you only need to get them turned. I warped my stock rotors 2x and a set of brembo blanks...So i upgraded to a slotted and dimple drilled, we'll see what happens with these...they cool a little better but im really hard on brakes.

You can just replace your pads if your in a pinch and you dont really care..It's kind of like changing your oil but not the filter.

How do the AEM pads bite? I don't know anyone that has used them yet...they are descently priced too.

porterfield brake pads are the best i've seen; carbon- kevlar, no squeak, low dust. They do shoes, also.

the graphite lube is called antiseeze (sp) it doesn't go behind the pads it goes where metal touches, calipers to support frame, on bolts and what not, you dont need it but it helps it make it easier for the next brake job, but i work at a shop and highly recommend going to a napa and getting OEM pads, they really are much better than honda's

oh and for the drums, take parking brake OFF, then beat around edges with mallet and it should slide right off, but honestly if you dont knkow how to take the drums off i would seriously consider having someone else do it, ive known many people to loose teeth from messing around with brake shoes

36,000 - changed brake pads, no rotors
72,000 - change brake pads, shave rotors
108,00 - change brake pads, change rotors

That's what im hoping for ! i'm pretty light on the brakes.

Amazing what nice big rotors can do huh? They must stay so cool, I was going to go with the big brake kit due to warping rotors like crazy but i wasn't too thrilled about the design. There is a lot more torque on the calipers and if one of those relocation bolts went...man that would be a mess. If i decide to upgrade brakes it will probably be to a rear conversion 4 piston all around. Do it right, ONCE. But we'll see how the sloted and drilled hold up to a heavy pedal.

How do you like the rotor upgrade? Extreme difference?

Not Very. To be completely honest, they feel like stock. I bought them from Kregen Auto. The only plus I have gotten from them is the low dust on my rims. I will probably go with Greenstuff next time.

Ive had my AEM big brake kit for about a year now and havent had a problem. They stop on a dime and they fell very tought. Very little pressure as well. IM going to doa conversion sometime soon as well as upgrade to bigger 4piston calipers

wow I cant believe you guys are changing your pads so frequent
i put on 37,000 miles almost since Jan. of 02.
And when i took of the pad yesterday, some of the wear grooves were not even completely gone.

I'm sorry you guys are TOO hard on your brakes

Do you pump them when coming to a stop ?? that helps !
and gesh stop speeding up to the stop signs and red lights, it's called coasting give it a try !

I'm glad you like them, does your car nose dive due to the added brake torque in the front and stock drums in the back. I would think that would cause a problem. How is the quality and thickness of the relocation bracket for the caliper? Yea the rear conversion is the way to go, aslong as it fits! My buddy got a rear conversion for his 93 and it definitly needed serious modification to make fitment. thnx for the info.

You mean drums? or did they put out a 7th gen (other than SI) with a disc version in the back?
