question about watershield layer

hi,

I have few question about the plastic sheet layer on the door panel. ( see pic, the white part)

1. What exact kinf of glue did Honda use to glue this layer on?

2. what will happen if we remove it for good?

3. I found out this sheet can actaully be a rattle resonace source when you listen to loud big base song. The way resonace happen is similar to drum if you think about it. Anybosy also think this can be a source of rattle sounds?

thanks

yeah I've taken my door panel apart a few times. it DOES reduce wind noise at higher speeds. When I pulled mine off the first time, the glue was still hard from the factory, but the hot sun made the plastic really soft. I stretched the plastic in some areas, so I'm planning on getting a FatMat door pack.

I don't know what that glue is (it's more like gum that never hardens). DO NOT get it on your clothes.

you mean BY HAVING the layer WIND NOISE will be lower?

so took it out I will get higher wind noise?

so wind noise trade with base vibration.

basically, while you're moving, air is passing through the cracks all over the car. when it gets between the car door, that's what makes 'woosh'ing noise. with the plastic on, the 'woosh'ing noise doesn't echo inside the door as much.

Same with sound and music from the speakers. Not all the sound generated gets channeled passed that black plastic honeycomb part of the door panel. The leftover noise will get trapped inside the hollow door and make noise if you leave the white cover off.

jsut do this. get two pieces of paper, hold one on each hand and hold them up close to your ears. now drop the papers, and hold your palms close to your ear (same distance as before with the papers).

you'll notice that your hands make it more quiet (you car hear air only in between), but with the pieces of paper you can still here the environment.
The white plastic seals off the hollow door frame, making it sort of whole and thicker like your hand.

yeah,

but I noticed with the sheet on, and listen to loud base music I hear more vibration. Like:"zzzzz..zzzz.." HOwerver, I did the test when the car is parked. So I don't know about wind noise.

because the the part of the sheet cover the hole on the panel will vibrate and make "zzzzzzz...zzz" sound. A bit like a human's ear drum.

Also, I already took the plastic sheet off to do my big base tone test, if I can't find the glue to glue it back I will be in trouble?

nope, try to restick the white plastic sheet on a hot day, in the sun. The remaining glue should be enough to reattach the white plastic sheet.

but knowing the sheet will vibrate with big base, should I put it back still? It is really a big dilemma...I know it is the source of vibration reseonace but without it there will be big wing noise...

what should I do? of course I know fat mat will probably do...but any cheaper way?

maybe try duct taping all around the white plastic sheet. Don't make it extremely tight, because a flatter/stiffer surface probably vibrates more than a loose surface.

I find out its purpose is only to cover the 2 big hole on the door, however, Honda decide to make the whole bigpiece of layer which covers the whole door, so it also covers some other smaller holes. however, because some wire goes in and out, therefore the layer is not 100% stick on th surface, some of it is not sticked to the surface and some is, and that where the vibration come from.

I might get some alternative layer similar to the factory one to ONLY fully conver those 2 big holes each on their own and other small holes. So all the holes are fully coverd individually, instead of one big sheet trying to cover them all but. Do you think this is a good idea?

what kind of material would you suggest to use? for best deadener effect. Of course, we are talking about alternatives...not fatmats.

in my opinion, the best way to keep things from rattling is to probably use a fluffy soft fabric like a towel, in place of the full white plastic sheet. Fabric absorbs sounds very well.

the idea about covering the holes separately is good. any sort of barrier would be good. Fatmat's purpose is really to just cover up all the holes so that nothing gets in and out that can cause more noise. It's also good for the wires that are on the outside; fatmat keeps them in place.

You should also wrap the loose wires (inside of the metal door frame) in something soft to prevent them from making noise when they hit the insides of the door. Also, consider putting some sort of lining around the speaker too, so when you're playing deep bass, the door panel won't vibrate against the speaker and the metal door frame. there's some sort of soft packing cushion that you can use for that. I have to find a picture of what it looks like.

I'm going to finish up wish my doors, after the Mid-Atlantic 7th gen meet.

I think I will use ICE-guard then put an layer of soft pasking cushin (those you sleep on when camping).

I also noticed that the door latch (the one you pull up to unlock, push down to lock) is a source of vibration as well. Well, not its plastic part, but you know the part after plastic part is just a metal stick (like those coat hanger) one part of it can touch the metal door panel and vibrate. and NO fatmat can solve the problem. one actaully need to put a thin layer of fabric (I will use leather) at the place where it touches the metal door panel.
