what to do?

Hey everyone ... just signed up to this forum. I have a 99 cx that's been a great commuter car. The only option it has is air. It's a 5-speed, with no power steering, manual windows. A pure pleasure to drive. It's got 170,000 miles on it. At around 90,000 the factory paint job started peeling. Some body shops said there are impurities in the primer. Honda said otherwise, and wouldn't do anything about it. That' my only complaint about the company.

Mechanically, it runs like a top. Cosmetically, it looks really bad. Should i consider painting it with this many miles on it? A paint job will be around $1,500. I'm also considering repainting it with truck liner.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Re: what to do?

Don't they have those cheapy paint jobs for $300 or something? If this thing is gonna run for another 2 years, that's all u need. Why buy the girl a 10 years house when she's only gonna stick around for a couple of years? OTOH if this car is in great shape and u are a low-mileage kinda guy, go for the 1.5K.

Go for it. If you're gonna drive it until it dies, might as well look good doing so. On another note, you can always get your hands dirty to make it last that much longer.

I personally wouldn't re-coat an entire car with truck bed liner.. but that's just me.

Re: what to do?

yeah ... i checked the cheap places. there are only a few dings in the body, but even maaco said it would be in the $1,500 range. the whole car needs to be stripped. now, there's surface rust appearing, so i'm looking to get something done soon.

btw, the car was stolen two weeks ago (on my 7-year-old's birthday, no less). the cops found it with nothing missing but my iphone charger. still with a full tank of gas and with my son's present in the back.

Re: what to do?

thanks for the input. i've pretty much done the dirty work to keep it on the road. i do all the mileage stuff. replaced the original clutch at 140,000, which i think is pretty amazing mileage for a clutch. another reason i'm thinking about truck liner is that we live in farm country. the car's that dark honda purple. the roads can get pretty dirty and muddy. a car wash and wax doesn't last too long.
