Smoking Tail Lights.
Smoking Tail Lights.
I bought some VHT Nightshade tinting spray for my tail lights, and I've heard literally about a thousand different ways to do this.
I know there's a real detailed post on here about, but I've heard that I should sand the tail lights down before I do it, but I don't want to ruin the tail lights.
Any tips? Anyone done this with the VHT spray? Any pointers would be great!

i personally wouldn't do it to my stock tail lights for one there expensive to replace . what if you get harassed by the cops and have to remove them or what if you decide you dont like it later down the road. if i really wanted to do it i would pick up some oem replicas and tint those so you still got your oem's.

Re: Smoking Tail Lights.
From what i've read after googling, that stuff really sucks..
BUT i guess some people have seen good results by spraying it to get the shade you want, then put 2 coats of a good clear coat on em. On a bike forum, a dude said he preps the surface taking some 2000 grit sandpaper to it.
here's an DIY application guide i found on a random chevy forum

Re: Smoking Tail Lights.
there is no need to sand, vht sticks to almost any smooth surface even chrome (if you want black chrome). spray it on til you get it how you want, if you go too dark you can always polish off small amounts of it using something like polishing compound or scratch-x. you should do this anyway to get the vht nice and shiny if it isnt already. once you have them looking as dark as you like it and shiny, seal in the paint with a couple coats of clear. the trick with vht is put on very thin coats at first otherwise it will run.

I've used the VHT to smoke the taillights but was not impressed with the results. I used a paint shop to paint the tail light with automotive paint. The results were great. By pass all the time and frustration and just get them painted.

Re: Smoking Tail Lights.
My headlights are tinted and were professionally done using thick 3M headlight tint. The headlights tint is starting to discolor and have burn spots in it due to heat of using the headlights. My taillights were also tinted and started to bubble after 1 year so I got it painted and am really happy with the results. Tinting is a temporary mod that needs redone after a year or two IMO.
