94 civic CX getting less mpg than it should
94 civic CX getting less mpg than it should
i have a 94 civic cx. when I bought the car i was told the timing belt had been done, the car seemed a bit sluggish, so I checked the timing with a timing light, and it was too far off to adjust with the dizzy.
so I bought a new belt, and timed it CORRECTLY, and the power picked up, and a couple mpg's, but not as much as i thought. (went from about 32 city to 36 city).
it is STOCK,
other recent work:
dist cap, rotor, plugs, wires
fuel filter
O2 sensor
new muffler and mid pipe (they were rotted out
running out of ideas.
this car should get over 40 mpg city.

there is tons of stuff to check, just go down the list. alignment, tire pressure, shocks, air filter, start using lubecontrol.com additives, lose some weight from the car if you can, check for vacuum leaks, clean out entire intake system including throttle body and any idle valves attached to it or to the intake mani, make sure battery is good, upgrade the factory ground wires with new 4 gauge wires and gold ring terminals, etc. just go thru everything and replace old parts that may affect mpg.

I am always checking tire pressure, always on top of oil changes, and air filters. I could look into the alignment, but it doesn't pull left or right.
not sure how shocks would affect mpg, that is a new one to me.
I have upgraded the grounds already
oh and I also replaced the pcv valve
battery is pretty new

shocks absorb vibration, otherwise your wheel will not be making good contact with the road at all times but rather bounce. good shocks are important for everything including braking, accel, turning, and mpg. i would try the lubecontrol oil and gas additives. my highway mpg went up 2-4 mpg after a month of use.
Re: 94 civic CX getting less mpg than it should
I found a vacuum leak in the tube that goes from the intake to the pcv valve, not sure how long it has been leaking, but it finally got bad enough to cause an idle issue.
I'll update my new MPG.
I refuse to buy additives to gain MPG, unless it made like a 10mpg difference, and was cheap (yea right)

lubecontrol additives 1 gallon jug costs around $60, and will raise your mpg anywhere from 2-10 mpg depending on the condition of your car. you might gain quite a bit on an older car. mine was only a couple yrs old at the time and i gained 4mpg. it is the only additive that will actually work, unlike the junk in stores, and fleets of company trucks have been using it for over 40 yrs. its lab tested, it works better than anything else you will find.
if you get the gallon of FP-plus for gasoline, and add 1 oz every tank fillup, it will last you 128 fillups and cost $0.50 per fillup. thats pretty darn cheap if you ask me, and the fuel savings you get will more than pay for it.
if you also get the gallon of LC20 for oil and add 1 oz every 1k miles and 3 oz every oil change, it will last you roughly 50,000 miles, or about $12 a year. that seems pretty cheap to me too.
