turtle wax polish compound?

i bought some polish compound to try to get rid of some swirl marks and oxidation. when i got home i tried it out on a small part of the corner of my rear bumper. and i noticed a difference immediately! it looked awesome! looked like clear, new paint. i have yet to try it on my entire car because its too dark now and i had a few questions about it.

will it harm my current paint? will my paint start flaking off over time because of it?

i did a little searching and i read you should wax the car once youve polished to protect the shine. is this true?

and i know people here have used a polish compound before. what do you think about it? good, bad, like it, dont like it? id like anyones opinion on this.

ps: this is a NON ABRASIVE polish.

Re: turtle wax polish compound?

eh idk. i prefer meguiars show car glaze if you must use a polish (sounds like you do). and then yeah you should wax immediately to protect the finish and keep waxing every few months. if its non abrasive, the turtle wax should prolly work.

yea i was standing at the auto part store for 20 minutes trying to decide between turtle and meguiars, but landed on getting turtle. got home and did some searching and found that almost 100% of people like meguriars best. i think ill do 1/2 my hood tomorrow with wash, polish and wax to see the results, then ill post up pics.

Re: turtle wax polish compound?

polishing compound is an abrasive. it's designed to do exactly what you said above. it's different than wax. it's less abrasive than buffing compound though. i've used polishing compound to get overspray off a car. whether or not it damages your paint and clear coat depends on how hard you push when you use it. if you're doing it by hand, there's really no worry. if you use a motorized buffer, then i've seen people eat right through the paint all the way to the metal on corners. polishing compound basically knocks off the high, sharp edges in the top coat due to scratches, oxidation, etc and smooths them out. that's the best way i can describe it. it's safe to use, but only once in a long while. you don't want to use it every month. that's what wax is for.

Re: turtle wax polish compound?

i asked the guy who works at the auto part store if it had and abrasives it it. he didnt know, so he called the dealers and they told him no. so idk.

but i did use it on my hood just now. wasnt able to do the whole car because i have to go to work in a few minutes. it wasnt what i expected. i was kinda hoping it would make all my swirl marks dissapear. that didnt happen. but it did do what you said it would do, electric. smoothed out the clear coat, did get rid of most oxidation with only one coat, filled in the swirl marks (but didnt remove them) and smoothed it out. it did bring back the shine, but not as much as i hoped. i like it but its nothing that swirlX wont do. and swirlX is cheaper too. so i guess its back to swirlX

ill upload the pic i took later
