98 civic hx m/t toasted at 84,000?
98 civic hx m/t toasted at 84,000?
I bought a used HX civic but the manual transmission has some bad bearings and needs to be replaced. just wondering if anyone knows about the longevity of these 98 HX manual transmissions. i really want to get the best gas mileage (HX) but don't want to get another HX m/t if its gonna go out under 100,000 miles. i have the option to get either a used LX or HX tranny (both around 50k). By the why, i don't race or rallie my ride i want MAX MPG. I have reason to believe the previous owner drag raced this ride and this could account for the bum tranny at only 84k.
Any suggestions???

LX and DX trany's are the same and they both use D16Y7 engines. Yours has a D16Y5. if, like you said, yours can use either one then there might not be such a thing as an "HX trany". Also, from what I understand an EX trany (which is different) can fit a DX, LX, and HX as well. So my point is that I think all the trany's are interchangeable.
So, your HX likely uses a standard non-ex transmission and therefore there your question regarding HX 5-speed transmissions being problematic is inaccurate. The only problem with HX's are the auto transmissions, which are CVT. They have been known to go out every 60k or so. Honda really screwed those people. Stay away from those!
If yours has been raced, then that's the reason it's going out. Civic trany's aren't great, they are good at best. For racing, they suck and aren't meant for such use. People are stupid. They'll buy an EX civic and they think they have a race car. These cars are economic cars meant to be work horses.
