New NSX does a 7:37 test lap around Nurburgring

For all you fanboys that don't realize what that means, allow me to elaborate.
The Nissan GT-R set a production class-record with a time of 7:29 in full production form. That's a hot lap with no one else on the track. The new NSX, in prototype form, ran a time merely 8 seconds slower in traffic. That's damn fast. If all the speculation and hyperbole holds true, I'm betting this thing can break the 7:20 mark on an empty-track hot lap. That should be enough to stave off the GT-R SpecV and even the ZR1.
I know, there's been a lot of criticism regarding all the hype about 'ring times, but damn. It's a good comparison of a car's abilities, and it's a hell of a lot more interesting than 0-60 times and lateral acceleration.

Oh, I just got word they're lapping a 7th-gen on the ring, it should be finishing its lap within the hour.

You think they're going to cut 17 seconds off a lap as easy as that? Guys have dedicated teams of engineers to shave off tenths of a second and anyone cutting a full second is unheard of. You're expecting 17? I hope it was rush hour on that track.

It's an 8% difference on such a long course. A tenth of a second difference from teams of engineers? That kind of minuscule difference could be attributed to ambient temperature, driver reaction time, missing an apex, or humidity. I think you're wrong.
With a car that's still in prototype form and on a track that looks like it might even be slightly wet, yeah, that's possible. And I've seen a few videos of cars run on Nordschleife and it's either completely empty, or very crowded. If you're constantly braking for the Elise in front of you and there's a 30mph closing speed, that could take 20 seconds off your time, yeah. Nurburgring's pretty damn popular on open days.

i agree 17 may be a bit unrealistic, but i mean come on. on GT4, I can shave a couple seconds here and there on the 'ring. with as many turns and hills as there are on the course, it's easy to gain or lose 4-5 seconds or more, depending on your best run of the day. it's one of the few courses on the game that you can see how corner entry and exit speeds can drastically affect your lap times, regardless of the car you're driving at the time.
not that i'm comparing myself in GT4 to some world-class driver in real-life, that's not what I'm getting at. but i bet if you ask that driver what his thoughts were, he's bound to say, "I could have shaved a few tenths to a second in this turn..." or " with stiffer sway bars...." or something to that effect. the fact that it's a prototype means it will only get better, and that's something to hope for as it nears production. Not that I'll be able to afford one, though.
just my .02

Yeah, but the that's the stock GT-R, the Spec-V's going to be faster than that. You've got to aim for the moving target if you want to stay on top.
Oh, and Jalopnik is sooooo much better than autoblog.

idkk a zr1 may be able to keep a pretty good pace with at least 620horsepower and around 3000pounds. With the proper driver that thing should break 180mph on that track or even 200.
O and a 7th gen? how many hours is that going to take?

That's a good point, I wonder if they'll make a Type-S...
