Stalls at half a tank. Any ideas?

Here's the deal - my car starts stalling just above half a tank when I roll to a sudden or quick stop. By the time I'm down to half a tank, every single time I come to even a slow rolling stop, it dies. And go figure - starts right back up every time. Still, I can't go more than half a tank without filling back up. Annoying, to say the least.

Is this a charcoal canister issue or is it something electrical? Anyone heard of this problem?

Sounds like fuel pump isn't seated in the tank or carrier properly. I'm just guessing, but pop the back seat off, disconnect the battery, take off the gas cap, and open the tank. Pull the pump assembly out and have a look-see.

The fuel pump was the first thing I replaced when I bought the car about 5 months ago. Though I'm human, I'm pretty sure it's in there right. I have to admit I don't want to tear into the gas tank again unless I absolutely have to... ugh. lol

When you remove the gas cap is there a sucking sound like there is a vacuum being released? You may have a vent clogged. See if it goes away without a gas cap on.

The OP has started more than one thread with the same topic. Can you merge them Rufus?

Mis-speak by Rufus. He meant other section on the site vice a completely different forum. Don't worry about it, it's just the mods keeping the site organized without too much duplicative content and questions.

Hmm, does it happen on a hill, or on a flat level surface as well?

when it gets to about 3/4 of a tank, it only does it on a steep downhill and when i come to a sudden stop - i.e. slam on my brakes for whatever reason.

by the time i'm down to half a tank, it's stalling every single time i roll to a stop, regardless of speed. it's so bad that i have to fill up when it gets this low.

Actually it isn't a "mis-speak". Multiple posts can be forum specific or site specific as the site is a large community and not communities broken down by topic. So when you post the exact same thread in multiple categories it is, in fact, a duplicate thread. Additionally, we have categories for organization. So the real question is what's the worse offense: the fact that a duplicate thread was made cluttering the site or the fact that an off topic thread now exists in a forum not intended for that post? These questions demand answers!

Mod or not, you are contributing to the 'off topic' part of this thread. I haven't strayed from topic. Any suggestions about my stalling problem?

Re: Stalls at half a tank. Any ideas?

This sounds like crap clogging your fuel line from your tank to your fuel pump. The fact that motion or fueling has an effect on the symptom may indicate that you are disturbing the sediment that is causing fuel restriction. I do not remember if you mentioned a fuel filter earlier, but I would look at that first and then you may have to drain your tank. Also, check the output of your fuel pump.

It does suck major air when I unscrew the gas cap - but leaving it loose and even completely off doesn't solve the stalling problem. I'm pretty sure this isn't a vapor lock issue.

Your sediment movement suggestion sounds viable. The first things I replaced when I bought this car a few months ago was the fuel filter and fuel pump, so those should be fine. Haven't actually checked the output of the pump, but I don't want to tear back into the tank unless I absolutely have to.

Has anyone heard of a clogged charcoal/carbon canister causing this? That's the only other thing I can think of to check.

Does the problem exist with a full tank of gas or only when it gets down to the half way mark?

Re: Stalls at half a tank. Any ideas?

She runs beautifully on a full tank of gas. When I'm down to 3/4ish, she starts stalling when I slam on the brakes or on a serious downhill slant (like the mountain I live on lol). By the time it's close to 1/2, it stalls every single time I roll to a stop. At half a tank even, it's so bad I am forced to fill back up. I've yet to get her lower than half.

Is there a vent somewhere on the tank? Everything I hear points to a vapor lock issue or the pressure from the extra gas (3/4 or fuller) forces the gas through whatever is blocking the flow. Are you sure the new fuel pump is good and is there some sort of check valve in the system that may not be working properly?
