Painted Tail Lights

My brother had purchased a 2002 honda civic ex, he had the best car in the world, Motegi rims, painted black tail lights to match the black pearl paint, and and exhaust TIP, which i thought was decent, But the car was past to me and I didnt like all the noise, I bought 04 civic factory rims , and now I want to take off the paint he sprayed on the tail lights, is there any possible way to take the paint off without scratching or pealing the clear coat off the tailight, The paint was named SHADES, any suggestions, Trying to go for a factory look here.

Re: Painted Tail Lights

I guess you're referring to "visual noise"....Might be hard getting that paint off safely.

Re: Painted Tail Lights

rubbing alc. will work to, but if he sanded or scuffed the tails before he painted them, they will not look good once you take the paint off.

Re: Painted Tail Lights

It all depends on some factors, how did he apply the paint? Spray can probably? what type of paint? Enamel? maybe, those are two of the most common things to do. You have a couple options, one being sanding the paint off, and sanding into the plastic, once you sand with varying grits of paper, you can then wetsand with a ultra fine paper like a 1500 and then you can polish/buff/wax the shine back into it. Which works like a charm, but it's a lot of work. You can try using 'aircraft remover' which you can get any any pep boys or walmart. It comes in a spray can, which blisters and peels the paint off of the surface, this works good, but I've never done it on plastic, I don't think it'll be a problem. However, if he also used primer before he painted, the aircraft remover won't pull the primer off. So there are a couple of options you can do. Or you could buy new lights.....Ha ha.
