first year for civics?

What was the first year that Civics were made? I have a friend who has 8 cars, and each one is the first model year for that type of car. He wants a Civic, but we can not find out anywhere what the first year was. Does anyone here know?

Thanks so much Kero. this does help a lot. I didn't know they had been around since '73. I thought it was probably more like int he early 80's. I didn't see a picture of the '73 in the article, but there's a pic of a '77 in there, and it's not very pretty. Oh well, a lot of the other first year cars he has aren't very pretty either. I'll show him this link, as it has a lot of other info. he'll probably find interesting. Thanks again!

The reason it's very hard to ever see a 70's civic is because they most likely rusted away way before the engines died.

70's and 80's hondas and toyotas had major rust problems as their steel was different from the US, etc.

Early Civics

There was very little similarity between the early Honda Civics and the current models. Cheap was the primary concern. Once Honda abandoned that, cheap was replaced by the Yugo (even worse, but you get the idea).

Oh lord, I remember when the yugo first came out. They were all over the roads, then all over the sides of the road broken down, not to mention teens would by these death traps for like $5000 and there were so unsafe.

I know I was a teen once but I would have rather purchase a slightly used honda or toyota over a new yugo.

A yugo at the same was smaller than my 86 civic SI which was small as it was.
