Awhile back when I first got my civic I was in the mountains while it was snowing, I slid out of control and hit a gaurd rail which bent up my left fender and broke the mounting tabs on my left headlight(was only doin 20). Just recently my right headlight bulb went out. I work at a gas station with a reapir shop and they told me I have to remove the entire bumper just to replace my bulb. Is this really true cause I dont think it is and seems really stupid for just replacing a bulb. I clould understand to replace the entire headlight. Also since my headlight is broken I want to put on some better looking aftermarket ones. Which ones are good. I have a 96 civic dx hatchback. Thanks.

You might have to remove the bumper to get to the screws to take the headlight cover off.
Taking off the bumper is usually easy though, as it should have some screws that will allow you to pull the bumper forward enough on one side to reach the headlight cover screws.

I have a 2000 civic and I have had to take my bumper off a total of six times to change bulbs, It is very true. I've done it so many times, I could pretty much do it with my eyes closed. It's actually pretty easy, pop the hood and you'll see like 6 or 8 pop-uptabs by where the grill is they look like little black buttons, pop those out .then by either tire where the bumper meets the wheel well there is a philip head screw on both the driver and passenger side front fenders , unscrew those. then under the bumper at the front of the car there are 4 more screws you need to take off 2 philips head screws and 2 bolts , once those are off the bumper shoul come right off, then you have access to the whole headlight assemblies. putting the bumper back on is just a matter of reversing the steps.Hope this helps you.

I've had to take off the front bumper alot also...It was annoying the first time but If you have to do it alot then it's not so bad....as TunerX said, "I've done it so many times, I could pretty much do it w/ my eyes closed." Honda does that as a security measure. That way people don't run off w/ your headlights lol.

Why would someone want to steal the headlights? lol

I doubt thats the reason for it to be honest. I think its just the way they built the car... perhaps so they can charge more for replacements?

LOL...that's just what some guy told me at a performance shop...I don't see why they would steal STOCK headlights.....but cosmetic ones, that's a different story. I have heard of people getting those stolen.

Have you guys been living under a rock, don't you know that the civic is one of the most stolen cars in America, specifically for it's parts, stock or otherwise.

Yeah for sure. I can see them stealing the whole car, but I cant see them taking headlights only, of all things.

Perhaps it happens, though I just haven't heard of any cases myself

where i live, nothing gets stolen.. i can leave my car outside all night with the windows down and key in the ignition, and it's still there in the morning

Nice posts and links on how to replace a Headlight Assembly or Bulbs. It gave me new and clear ideas on how to really see things when I would do it on my own. Great post!
