Re: Really Need 87 Octane For 06 Si?

I don't know why this is a huge debate...

premium is usually .20 more a gallon. i fill up when i get down to about a 1/4 of a tank, sometimes an 1/8, and it's about 9.5 gallons, so i'm just under 2.00 more for a tank. fill up once a week, so that's 4 times a month, 8 bucks extra a month. you won't notice it. cancel a trip to taco bell every now and then to make up for it.

and someone said something about grocery store gas, i always fill up at kroger and have noticed no significant difference. i've got gas at giant eagle before as well, at the getgo station. the only gas i know that has made a difference is sunoco 94 octane.

Right after Hurricane Katrina, most gas stations didn't have anything other than 87 octane. I just want to know what the Si can really run versus what the manufacturer suggests. Japanese cars have always had knock sensors to pull timing if there's enough detonation. I know many people that run 87 octane in their Town Cars, which require 91+ octane premium fuel.

well, I KNOW with my motor (k20a2) that if I put 87 octane in, the ECU eventually recognizes it and goes into limp mode. i don't know if the si does the same.

Re: Really Need 87 Octane For 06 Si?

Interesting. It probably does that as a safeguard to prevent any detonation due to knock sensor lag. The cost savings aren't significant (about $43 a year for my annual mileage) but I just wanted to know what would happen in a SHTF situation where 91+ octane was not available.

in a SHTF situation I'd like to think I'd be worrying about something else then my gas in my car...but I guess this debate/conversation is over...

In a SHTF situation like Hurricane Katrina, I'd be worried about transportation, and since the Civic Si gets decent gas mileage, it'd be a valid concern.
