That's a good question... here's what I could find. I'm still not really clear on it but i'm gonna take a guess and say we're supposed to run D4 because it's suitable for use where Dextron III is recommended.
Red Line Synthetic D4ATF
Suitable for use where Dexron II, III, IV or Mercon, Mercon V Fluids are recommended in post 1988 transmissions. Also satisfies API 70W80 GL-4 Gear Requirements.
Red Line C+ ATF
Satisfies the performance requirements of Chrysler MS7176, ATF+, ATF+2, ATF+3 and ATF+4.

Rep Power: 363 the D4ATF is what you want to put in your civic , I ran it with no problems at all in fact shifting was faster and smoother especially after I built my tranny

Rep Power: 346 It's not that expensive if you think about it. In the long run it's more expensive to do regular oil change intervals with regular motor oil then it is to flush out your tranny and put in all redline D4ATF.
Let's say you change your motor oil every 5,000 miles. I've gone almost 100k on the same tranny fluid. So that's 20 oil changes to 1 tranny flush refill.
20 oil changes + filter at 15bux (DIY) = $300 (more if you pay a shop to do this)
7qt's of Redline D4ATF = $70 (plus maybe $50 to flush your old fluid and refill with the new stuff)

Rep Power: 0 I talked to a few mechanics, and they all say you have to completely drain
the atf if you are switching to any synthetic. So my guess is you'd need at least 9 quarts and you have to follow the drain and refill 4x process like the manual directs.
Dont do a tranny flush, any mechanic who isnt trying to sell you a tranny flush will tell you it is very bad for the tranny.

Rep Power: 375 personally, I would recommend against redline. we have seen UOAs of their oil and it's less than impressive. it wears at TWICE the rate of most other oils.

Rep Power: 787 i would recommend against most anything mentioned here. do not flush the trans oil, do not use aftermarket "performance" fluid. thats for track cars mostly. the last guy here who used mobil 1 in the trans and flushed it had the trans blow up 20k later. have fun
