Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

We have a returnless system fuel system........which means....the fuel pressure regulator is in the fuel tank....all fuel flow is controlled by ECM.....

The return style system pushes all the fuel it can and then the regulator decides what to use........we need to convert over to a return style to proper control this.

You need a boost sensing regulator, modified stock fuel rail w/ return bung, alot of SS hose back to tank, & a good fuel pump

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

Well I don't know what shop can do fuel rail swap that easy.....good luck with that, they must be magicians!

Dopes was able to mock up a boost sensing regulator setup w/ his stock pump & FPR.....I believe he was able to go 15psi +........he has a write up on it.

I believe streetlevelperformance still sells the kit for this but it's crazy money.
I belive 600-800 dollar range.

This is too easy of a setup to build for that much.

-Bulk supply of SS line
-AN fittings & weld on bung for stock fuel rail
-Modified Stock fuel rail
-Upgraded fuel Pump
-Boost sensing FPR
-& the ***** to hack up your stock pump.....

I think the hardest part of your day would be messing with the -AN fittings.....SS lines in the freezer overnight. I been doing that for years & it works great. You don't even have to buy -AN wrenchs. My Snap on Wrenchs are so smooth they don't scratch my fittings!

Cake walk......

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

here are the pictures:

I've had the kit for about 3 years now, but never got to take full functionality with it due to turbo complications. The one thing I didn't like about the kit was the lack of a secure mounting into the fuel tank... what you see in that picture is a load of gorilla glue (which worked ugly, but never had problems since day one). A little R&D on someone's part and a better installation option can be made using custom brackets or whatever... it's just dumping the fuel returning from the engine back into the tank.

The kit also came with the wrong sizes of Earl's Super Stock Fuel Hose, so rather than wait (installation was already under way before discovering this...) i went out and bought fuel-grade hose.

Nor did it come with instructions, but I'd be happy to help with any questions and can take pictures of how it's installed as I disassemble it.

I ordered the stock parts needed to uninstall and it came to just under $100, but I was really hoping to make at least $100 off this, so does $200 sound ok, with shipping on me?

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

The stainless steel fuel lines are fine and cut to spec, but the Earl's Super Stock Fuel Hose was not. I no longer have that... it was probably cut to shreds in frustration. They were only two hoses, cut to less than a foot each. The ones I received were just inches too short. I'll be sending the one's I'm currently using.

I didn't need the fuel gauge kit because i had an autometer cobalt gauge already. I still have the B&M gauge kit to ship though (which is really just a B&M gauge with fittings attached to fit into the regulator...good for engine tuning, but you'll need extra line to feed it into the cabin to install...).

The walbro pump is still in my tank and will be removed for shipping.

Haven't had any issues with the regulator crapping out...pressure has been consistent to what i have it set at (45psi). Once you step on the gas it goes up about 7-8psi, but I've never tested it under high boost (only had mine set around 3psi due to lack of e-manage/tuning).

The install is almost plug & play...you'll need to drill a hole in the top of the fuel pump assembly to get the return line fitting screwed in and drill holes to attach the regulator onto the firewall, otherwise pretty straight forward. Pressure is managed using a hex wrench (I think turning clockwise raises the pressure). I initially had problems because I forgot to remove the stock regulator in the tank, thanks to not having installation instructions. You won't make that mistake

my paypal e-mail is stever703@comcast.net - I'm hoping to have all the parts I need no later than next weekend to get this shipped out to you. I'm guessing you're not close to DC, cause I'd be happy to help you with any assistance you need!

hmmm ... question .. foos or anyone-- i jus called my machine shop and he said since im going with the d16 intake mani .. he is going to swap the rail too and the rail on his shop has the return and everything on it so he's like there's no point in returning ur d17... My question was will the d16 fuel rail fit my d17?? .. will i have any problems or with simple mods he can replace my IM, fuel rail and TB with the d16?

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

Whoa stop. You ask like 15 questions in two sentences! If your new rail already has an FPR, you will just need to run a new line to the tank into a bulkhead fitting to run as the return. Check clubrsx for a couple good DIYs on to do this.

So. Yes, the D16 rail will fit your car because you're converting to a D16 intake mani. Heck, a D16 rail fits a D17 intake mani (from what I remember), you just need to run the return line. Since you've already got the stuff (STR rail and FPR), you don't really need this setup unless you don't already have the fuel line and the Walbro pump.

Re: Fuel Pressure Regulator Installation

Wow, the fuel pressure isn't controlled by the ecu, it's a purely mechanical system. There is a regulator in the in tank pump assembly with a spring that needs to be removed. You don't have to modify the rail. All you need is a T in the feed line before the rail, one goes into the side of the regulator, the other goes to the rail. Then drop it off back to the tank. It's relatively simple.
