DIY: ATF Change
this isnt really a true fluid change...since your only changing about 1/2 of the fluid....sure theres some in your pan...but theres also some in the torque converter...and if theres an a/t fluid cooler...theres more in there. ( i dont own an a/t, i dont know if it does.).

if you look at the pic of the liquid draining, that's actually dark brown, not red
i coldn't do the coolant because our car requires honda coolant, or else is corrose through the lines and such

Change it more often...
I changed my ATF on my Civic at 2,500 miles and 5,000 miles. Here is the reason...and feel free to challenge. When a tranny is breaking in, a lot of metal shards are being created. Theoretically, the fluid now contains metal which heats up faster than fluid thus impairing my tranny performance. When I changed it at 2,500 miles there was plenty of metal that came out. Not so much at 5,000 though. But I also plan on changing my ATF every 10,000-15,000 miles because ATF is used to not only lube but cool the tranny. I don't know about you all, but I drive my cars hard. $12 for the fluid is cheap insurance I think. Oh, and I also did this method on my last car which was a Nissan Maxima. It's tranny last till 247,000 miles. Anyone else do this?

is there a cheap place anyone knows of to get the stock honda atf fluid. my local dealership sells it for 7.50 a quart..which costs more than mobile 1 synthetic. Oh, and to fill it back up i guess we'll need a long funnel? or is there some other more convenient hole?

Re: DIY: ATF Change
should be similar, the tranny bolt may be in a different spot, and it may hold different amount of fluid, but basically its taking off the bolt, letting fluid drain, then filling it back up through the dipstick. and check the level once the car is warmed up and running.
Re: DIY: ATF Change
is there a picture showing where to place the jack stands? as I do not have a manual... and about the bolt you unscrew I understand there is a washer/gasket as well, does that need to be replaced? or can it be reused?

Re: DIY: ATF Change
yeah buy a new washer every time. its a sealing gasket. the jack points are a bit behind the front wheels, on the side of the car, where you see the longer piece of metal sticking out. i can take a pic if it helps. its exactly below the gap where the front door and fender meet.

Re: DIY: ATF Change
yeah and i always need a hollow pipe on it for extra leverage. the bolt has a square 3/8 hole that only the ratchet goes in without attachments. none of the other bolts in that area have a square hole except the trans bolt.
Re: DIY: ATF Change
yea I was using the 3/8 wrench and a cheater pipe, I bent it pretty good, im thinking it was just a cheap POS as it looked like a wallmart no name brand... counter clockwise correct? it looks like my whole transmission was moving when I was trying to loosen it, im going to pick up a kobalt wrench today at lowes that way I can return it if I happen to bend it again...

people i changed my ATF and now wehen i press the X there is no acceleration. This goes on until i completely stop and change gears and start back. it happens frequently but not all the time. Its like the tranny is going. my mech says its not a problem but i don't think he understands the full problem. what do you guys think? ever experienced this?

Re: DIY: ATF Change
did you use the honda fluid? did you actually fill it to the proper level? checking the fluid with the car fully warmed up and running, it should be at the top of the dipstick. over or underfilling the trans will cause serious issues.
Re: DIY: ATF Change
^^ X2 please use Honda fluid.. the only fluid in my car thats not Honda is my coolant (Prestone 50/50) and my oil (Moblie) Do what gearbox says get the car to Operating temperature and then take it for a spin around the block. Park the car put on your park brake and go through the shifter from park all the way down and then check your fluid level. Should be in the cross hatched section. Check it wil the car in park idling and hot. If its not in the cross hatched section your fluid is off.. fix it
