Affixing a hood emblem
Affixing a hood emblem
Hello, I found this forum and registered in hopes that one of you good people could give me guidance for a basic fix that I should be able to do myself.
I live in San Francisco, and park my 2003 Civic on the street, only driving it a few times a year. Fortunately, I live in a nice neighborhood and over the years there have been no incidents other than a broken window a few years ago (and that perpetrator was kind enough to break the smallest rear window and neatly leave the contents of the glove compartment on the front seat when he didn't find a gps or whatever he was looking for).
Oddly though a week or so ago, I walked by the car and saw my Honda hood emblem propped up on the driver's side window. Upon looking at the hood, sure enough the emblem was just off -- no other issues. It's almost as if someone had just been playing around and neatly separated it from the hood. (Then maybe that same person, or a neighbor passing by noticing it on the ground, put it on the window where I would see it.)
I assume I just need to get some kind of adhesive, and very carefully stick it back on. Given that I worry enough about getting registration and parking stickers lined up just so, and that I don't want the emblem blowing off as I'm driving -- I'm putting some thought into exactly how I need to do this.
And that's where you come in! What's your expert opinion?

Re: Affixing a hood emblem
best idea is get a new emblem that has the tape already on it. or you can go buy some double sided mounting tape from the store and try that. but you have to cut very small pieces to fit behind there, otherwise the emblem will not sit flush on the car. or leave the emblem off...
Re: Affixing a hood emblem
Thanks gearbox, I'll probably try the double sided mounting tape. If that doesn't work, I could always get a new emblem. (Driving around without one on just doesn't seem like it will look right.)
One thing I'm puzzled by though is that there doesn't seem to be any trace of any prior adhesive. It just looks like a clean removal. On the emblem itself, there's a small place on the inside (near the bottom of one leg of the H) where it might have been a plastic connection that was snapped off. Otherwise, there's nothing that looks like it was attaching. There are no real flat places (where I'd normally think to use tape). Since there are cavities, particularly on the back side of the H, I could probably use the tape there and it would still stay flush.
Sorry for the naive question/observations.

Re: Affixing a hood emblem
some emblems are held with plastic pins, if you have holes in the metal body. newer models can use pins and tape, but some older cars just had tape. its tricky to apply the tape yourself tho. if you are sure you want the emblem on there forever, you can also use a little bit of general purpose epoxy glue. the 5 minute one so you dont have to hold it in place forever.
Re: Affixing a hood emblem
I used epoxy. The emblem looks just as good as it did before, and stayed on for a trip out to the East Bay for Christmas - so I think it's probably on there for good!
Thanks for your help.
