Long Course Advantage?

Just got back from a 2-day event in CO Springs that went better than expected. Sunday was basically the same course as Saturday just reversed, included a very long straight with a high speed slalom at the beginning or end depending on the direction. My HX is the slowest of slow cars because of the tall second gear so I thought I was gonna get completely killed. Saturday went better than I expected, although the "straights" were all uphill so lack of power hurt. Sunday was a surprise as I must have found a pretty good line (felt really ragged tho) and the "straights" were downhill. Ended up mid pack in STS and 13 of 46 novices. I'm thinking the tall second gear was an advantage since the rs subies and 89-90 civics were into 3rd gear in several places and the torque loss in 3rd gear probably hurts more than people think, not to mention shifting time. What's totally shocking is how many faster cars had slower raw times. But you experienced 7th gen autocrossers already know how cool it feels!

Hankook rs-2s worked well and make lots of noise/warning which is what I need. Gotta work on car control now to get it to follow the line my brain is drawing...

Its possible that the taller gears may have helped you out... or you may have just been more comfortable with the car... Who knows (need to test the theory more )

Yeah Zzyzx, the more I think about it, a relatively short 2nd gear should still have an advantage for acceleration. It was probably course shape that helped, ie lots of flowing medium-high speed corners, less emphasis on acceleration. Sticky tires & pushing the limit help too!

PCB-I'll be there, they do a good course at DIA in my limited experience. You're gonna have a blast! I drive a very stock looking white coupe. Are you running h stock or STS?

I am running sts. I have a Rallye Red Coupe. My mods are a 19mm rear sway bar (which I might be getting rid of if you are interested), Neuspeed front strut bar, eibach sportline springs, Koni D Spec shocks, and a short shifter. I will be running on 17s, but hopefully I will get some smaller wheels to compete on soon.
