I know, I know, but i have read tons of threads about pads.
Now I know zzyzx has the porterfields and boilermaker has the Hawks (i think). I have the EBC pads and basically they suck. I want to know what you guys think I should get for autox.
Axxis Utlimates or Metal Masters
Porterfield R4-S
Hawk HP-Plus
Also, where can I get them for a relatively good deal? thanks

Rob, I've got Axxis Ultimates actually. ($46.99, www.importrp.com)
I would tell you how they are, but I haven't installed them yet.
Next weekend, then I'm going to race with them the 16th. I'll let you know then.

So far I love my porterfields, they have thier querks like talking to me a bit on slow speed stops, but Hey they are pratically race pads.
a few notes on them:
1. Carbon Kevlar pads smell funny when they get hot.
2. After several trips through death vally (start at 6,000 feet, drop to -100, and then climb back to 6,000 feet) I can say that I have yet to get these pads to fade, I've gotten them VERY hot, but no fade.
3. they squeek abit on slow speed stops.
4. as far as the complaint of them crumbling, after some reasearch I found it was becasue of missuse, the drivers were using the wrong compound and Grossly overheating them. (thers a hand full of Club racers in town here that run Porterfields and have had no problems.)
I know that Hawk makes good pads for High performance, as does Axxis.
For hawk, You want the HP Plus not the HPS (you allready konw this)
Axxis, the Ultimates seem to be the popular choice.
You may want to look at Performance Friction too, they make mostly Race pads but have a few streetable compounds.
shop around for the best deal, Hawk and Axxis would probably be the best deal for the $$$. (I'm almost certin that the ULtimates are rated to a higher temp then the HP Plus)

Some people have been having issues with the EBC pads (Some have excessive squealing, others are complainig about brake feel). and the AEM replacements.... well they would do fine on the street but they are NOT high performance pads. I havent been able to find the opperating temp of them but I suspect its in the 500 Deg or lower range. (My porterfields are good to 1100 Deg, the Axxis Ultimates are good to 1,000 deg).

Refer to the thread by Taz757 in wheels tires and brakes. They shake at when stopping at high speeds and are really loud.

there are blue stuff (for regular cars), green stuff (for light racing, performance) and red stuff (for heavier cars and heavy racing). they depend on their heat ratings.
I got Hawk HP+ or HPS for sale, my opinion its one of the best pads! You must get new fluid, like ATE or Motul600
Let me know I got em in stock

I have DOT 4 ATE superblue in there now
. Thanks for the link. I will keep that in mind, but they better be cheap!
Anyone heard of carbontech? I have been suggested those too at honda-tech and sccaforums. They also suggest cobalt, but those are a little to expensive for my tastes.

Lots of people use Carbotech and Cobalts. They both seem to be rotor unfriendly, but when rotors are $30 who cares. They're both more towards race pads than street pads though... so if you do lots of DDing, ya might want to tone it down a little from those.

powerslots aren't $30, so i guess I will pass on those. hmm. Looks like the ultimates or porterfields. Hawks i have heard mixed reviews about. How much are the porterfields, zzyzx?

Pads were $70 Shoes were $80 (about, I dont really remember any more). They are one of the few companys that make High performance shoes.... I got the R4-S, the R4s are a Higher temp pad (1600) so if you plan on doing track days go with the R4 rather then the R4-S

No they are not the same.
Hawk Hp+ pads are good pads but Porterfield R4-S pads are rated to a higher temp before they fade.
(Hawk HP+ are good to 800F, Porterfield R4-S are good to 1100F)
Now for Regular street driving this 300 Deg difference would never matter nor would you be likely to get the HP+ to fade. But with Track days, Autocross and "Spirited" driving that extra 300 deg can make a lot of difference. (Depending if you do a lot of trail braking... )
Oh ya, the Axxis Ultimate are good to 1000F

But like you said, Brembo blanks and Hawk HP+ pads would make a good Street and most autocross applications. Buy you'd probably want some thing more resistand to fade if you did Track Days.

I have EBC redstuff, and they work fine when they're cold, you just have to press a little harder, but however, they do make a shitload of brake dust, but have very good fade resistance.

Ok this is my take on the whole situation:
If you drive hard and once a month or so go auto x/ road race, then brembo blanks and HP+ Pads are alright.
If you are a hardcore auto x junky, then the porterfield or carbon tech brakes with (x) rotors are good.
If you drive easy to hard on the street and like to stop nicley and use your brakes if needed, then brembo blanks, or powerslot rotors and Hawk HPS pads are good. HP+ are a little noisy but its all in good terms.

here's my take on the matter, if you drive hard, get cheap rotors, cause you will go through them, they will develop carbon buildup on them and won't work well, and you'll have to replace them.
As far as pads, you basically need to figure out how hot you get your brakes, if you drive hard (not fast, HARD, as in lots of late HARD braking) then you will need high temp pads, when I go driving for real, I'm doing a lot of 90 down to 50-60 mile per hour slow downs, and have yet to fade the redstuff, however, the stock pads would start to go. You don't need a high temp pad unless you come to frequent stops, or are speeding up and slowing down a lot.
Better pads and rotors won't improve initial stopping distance, they will just allow you to repetidly stop in a relitivly simialr distance. Ulitmatly what determines stopping distance is tires and drivers skill.
