Just another Civic
Just another Civic
I want to start by saying this site rocks. I've posted topics on hondatech and honda-acura.net with no responses, screw them.
I am the original owner of a 01 LX auto. No real mods other than full synthetic motor oil, synthetic atf, silocone brake fluid, K&N stock replacement filter, oil catch can and a new set of Toyos.
Im gonna drive it another year and halft till its paid off then start the mods. I like the idea of a hybrid k24/Type R head with a 6 speed. I'll sell my Integra to pay for that. I've been modding Hondas for almost ten years now. I've had my hand in a couple of 2.2 liter 5th gen Civic swaps. A 94 USDM H22A Coupe and a JDM Dohc F22B 92 Hatch. Along with a b16 CRX and 2 LS/Vetcs (lsvtec is crap btw) My other car keeps up neck and neck with the Hatch, but not the coupe damnit.
My other ride. 90 Integra LS Hatch.
OBX LS cams, ported and polished head done 100% by hand, blox intake manifold, ported throttle body from some dude off ebay, 4th gen Accord cap with an external accel coil, ngk wires, iridium plugs, obx header, "test" pipe, cheap *** ebay ricer exhaust with a obnoxious cannon, custom made short ram with a K&N cone, chipped obd0 ecu, fuel gauge and adjustable pressure regulator running just a little rich, 10.8:1 compression pistons, jdm b18C rods and crank, adjustable cam gears, block guard, energy suspension suspension bushings, es engine mount inserts, cheap ebay short throw shifter, hurst shifter bushings, custom grounding kit from stereo cables, nkk 8lb flywheel and clutch, all synthetic fluids, ebc brake pads, silocone brake fluid, tokico shocks and springs (no camber correction yet), 14" steelies w/ Yokohamma A550s and an OEM Titanium S2000 Shift **** (thats the biggest power adder).
Removed the following: air conditioning, power steering (original rack), carpet, passenger and rear seat, spare tire, bumper supports (custom brackets), and a few smaller things like sound deadening.
Yea I got some cheap crap all around, but I planned well and did it on a budget of about $2,500. I need some more suspension goodies and some alloys next, then some real head work, and then brake upgrades. At some point it will need a roll cage. It never ends, modding a car is more addictive than coke (and a hell of a lot healthier).

The LS rods are weaker and not as well balanced. The Ls crank is not as well balanced either. The ls does not have a girdle for the main caps or piston oil squrters. When you want to rev high this is not the ideal situation. On an engine that needs to rev high to make good power proper balancing is a must.
The kid I did the second build for decided to chip his P72 and set the redline to 9000 rpms on a stock bottom, he did this on his own. He snapped a rod a few weeks later. He threatened to take me to court, untill I showed him an e-mail I sent where I explained that revving it over 7,000 rpms was not a good idea on his setup. It caused a lot of headaches for me and I regret even doing the job. I really needed the money at the time.
The first LS/VTEC build I did included a sleeved block w/84 mm bore, balanced and knife edged LS crank, Eagle rods and Aris forged pistons. Its a daily driver that revs to 7,800 rpms on a daily basis for over a year. He spent nearly 2 grand more on his build and it payed off. His friend saw the results and decided to go to me for the work. Unfortunatly for him he was cheap and it bit him in the *** in the end. This helped to end my good rep on Honda Tech, but they suck now anyways.
So a LS Vtec is not nesisaraly a bad thing, if done with the right mix of parts. It has a reputation for cheap power, witch it does accomplish but its not the most ideal situation. I reccomend a full VTEC motor to most people cuz it usually works out cheaper and more reliably.
