Sometimes people don't think. I wonder if the symbols have a filter? I noticed that even though the gauge cluster has regular clear lighting, the numbers still come out green. May be the same effect on the shifter. Someone needs to open it up and see what's going on.
hey if you follow the "remove center console" DIY it'll leave behind the shifter surround panel. unscrew the shift **** and take that shifter surround panel off.
There's only one led that lights all of the things up (p,r,n,etc). it's attached to a thin wire/line. There's a little rectngle door/cover/clip(?) on silver plate of the shifter surround, underneath it is the bulb. You have to take the console out to get to the bottom of the bulb. opening that little cover will only show you the top of the bulb, you cant puill it out or anything

I'm not up for reading all those posts so I'll inform you on how it's done (assuming I comprehend what you are asking).
It appears that he used super white LED's to replace his console bulbs. Thus, his climate control ***** lights have been replaced with LED's as is the shifter indicator lights.
Now the reason why you can't simply replace the bulbs is because there are orange filters present (ie. between the symbols and light bulb). In order to get past this, you'll need to take apart your shifter console remove the orange filters from the shifter lights (which isn't that hard). Afterwards, if you want the same effect as the picture, you'll need to use LED's. Normal dash bulbs give off an impure light, which has the warm "yellow" glow we're all too familiar with.
I hope this answers your question.

jeezus. You try to help people out and some jackass is always there bringing you down. damn newbs
the only way you're going to find out is if you do it yourself
I still have that little led under the boot. I covered the bulb with electrical tape, just to make sure light doesn't shine through any unsuspected gaps, not visible during the day but certainly shines through at night.

Okay, I took apart my shifter to paint the trim black instead of silver. On my sedan, there's just a light bulb (small one like the ones behind the gauge cluster) below the D, R, N... so I'm assuming you can just buy a filter for it. I'll post pics later.

the red from the shifter is not from a film, it's actually part of the plate
you'll most likely need to ask d, because you'll have to remove those red from the plate some how

lol that's me! But yeah, I have a sedan and normally the lights are yellowish. I changed them to red recently using red lens repair tape. There definately is some kind of filter painted on, so they didn't come out as bright as the other dash lights. Someone used acetone to dissolve the painted part off the bottom. Here's what mine looks like.
Derek used a 6 inch neon. I'm guessing he just covered up the red with something then just put in the neon. Read his coments and it's the last where he briefly explains it (1 sentence brief)
