After 200,000 kms and 5 years of Canadian winters the heatshield on my catalytic converter is pretty rusty and has started rattling...
Is it safe to just remove the heat shield or will that cause damage? ie:cause the wires to melt that run along the floor inside the centre console?
Thanks

It shouldnt cause any problems, lots of people remove it. If you want extra protection for piece of mind, find some of that heat reflective/ fire retardant material that is adhesive and apply it to the under body around the cat. If you think about it though, the headers have a sensor plugged right into them and it isnt melted. exhaust temp is around 200 degrees if I remember correctly. unless you had the wire right on it, you should be good.

If you want the shields left on, however do not want to buy new shields, take several hose clamps, and wrap them around the convertor and shield.

^word.
If you do take it off just stay out of dry grass and such that would be tall enough to touch it. I knew a guy that took his off his Jeep and parked it in a grass field that reached the bottom of the car at a bonfire. Needless to say there was two fires going on for a while.

I have some copper wire wrapped around it right now, but it keeps coming loose and it is a pain to keep jacking up the car to tighten it...
Hose clamps might be a better solution
I tend to stay off the grass with my car, but that is a very valid point about
dry grass catching fire, and as much as I want a new car, that is not the right way to get it

The stealership took mine off like 2 years ago cause it was rattling, and i said if anything remotely happens they have to take the blame... since then still no probs So i would assume its safe
