How big a system?
I'm looking to finish out my system. I got sidetracked over the summer buying wheels and upgrading my suspension. I currently have Alpine Type-R 6 1/2"s in the front and the same but 6x9s in the rear running on an Alpine PDX 4.100 amp. I want to get subs, but I don't want my rear springs to sag. Is it only big systems in your trunk that cause the springs to sag. I'm probably only going to get one sub. Is that enough bass? Any thoughts?

Re: How big a system?
I've got two 12" subs (big DVC Kenwood Excelon jobbers) a meaty Kenwood amp and my battery back there and my springs don't sag. I'm downgrading to one sub, because 2 is just too much. One quality, amply powered 10" sub will easily knock your socks off.
Re: How big a system?
i bought 2 12in type R's with 2 1500watt Rockford amps and sold them in a week. In all honesty, like clint said, 1 10'in with the correct amp is WAY more than you need. hell, my type R speakers all around are good enough for me.
Re: How big a system?
i have 1 10" sub with about 400 watts powering that sub and it sounds nice. its all in how you tune it.
it hits harder that my friends 3 10's with not nearly as much raddle.

Re: How big a system?
so what would yall suggest in the 10" range. I don't want anything crazy. I don't listen to much rap. I just want so good clean bass to back up my music. (rock, techno, etc.) Sorry for the noobish questions? lol. never had subs before
Re: How big a system?
i have a pair of kenwood 10's and im very happy with them. if you are concerned about weight, maybe look at a fiberglass box. they are cheaper to make, but will cost a lot have made
Re: How big a system?
i got 2 12" fosgates, powered by an 1800 watt 2 channel fosgate amp, and its a looooot of power for a small sedan, but i love it still, it just rattles everything loose, i say 1 12, or 2 10s should be good for ya

Re: How big a system?
My favorite 10" sub was a lower end Xtant that they don't make anymore. I paid like $60 for it new, it had a nice rubber surround, was very responsive and banged away all day long. That being said, Kicker makes a decent, mid-range sub, and really so does every other major brand. Honestly, just stick with a reputable brand, and be sure to throw at least its RMS rating at it from an amp standpoint in order for it to sound decent.

Tell your friends to lose weight! Just kidding, you'd be better off looking into acoustics than woofer sizes. You can get great sound out of a 10 inch sub or 2 12 inch subs depending on how you mount them.

Re: How big a system?
Here's my "best budget system story". 1985 CRX HF with the 3 bbl carb. I spent all of $250 on the system and it was bangin'. I had one Kicker Comp 10" sub running at 120 watts RMS bridged off two channels of a 4-channel Ebay Sherwood amp (cost me $30). The other 2 channels on the Sherwood powered my $15 clearance Jensen 6x9s. Up front were 2 factory Bose (from an old 80-sumthin BMW) 6" speakers in the doors running off an old $20 Sony 2 channel amp (ebay again) and then I had two 4 1/2" Bolt coaxials in a custom little box in the dash running off the cheap Wal-Mart VR 100 watt amp. This was all running off a hand-me-down Panasonic head unit.
This system sounded fan-****ing-tastic! Bottom line is get a low-end Kicker or Rockford 10" sub and a name-brand 2 channel amp that will run about 150-200 watts RMS when it's bridged down to one channel. This will be more than enough to give decent sound to your system without breaking the bank.

Re: How big a system?
i've got a type r in the back with about 500 watts running to it and it rattles the hell out of the deck, and hurts my ears when i crank it. but for everyday listening, i absolutely love the sound quality and depth and i've got no sag. i'm on eibach reds on tokico blues.
Re: How big a system?
you really shouldnt be too worried about the weight issue, i have an 80lb box, and the sag is BARELY noticeable, (maybe 1/4 of an inch), and as for the sub itself, you can go with an alpine type R 10", ( the guy saying type X is crazy, those are huge!!) 1 10" is all you need for good bass, but i LOVE my BASS!!, 1000rms, dual 12's, is unreal. it rattles everything when you crank it up, but the rattling is simply drowned out by the bass!!, muahhaha!! I WIN!!

Re: How big a system?
Since everyone is suggest alpine subs. I'm not going to.
How about infinity reference subs. The are clean hitting subs, cleaner than the alpine's for sure. infinity kappa subs are good too. However, you said you don't want anything too powerful so stick with the reference line.

Re: How big a system?
Okay, I'll list the things you need to know.
- Bigger is better only when you have a budget. Can't afford good stuff? Just get bigger stuff......this is the wrong way to go but unfortunately is all too common.
- Pick an amplifier with the correct number of channels, correct wattage and correct ohms. You can get all kinds of different sound out of a 1000 watt amplifier, it's all in how it's wired. For channels, it should match the number of subs. For wattage, it should match the RMS on the subs, for ohms, it should be as low as possible.
- Pick an amplifier that is rated D class or better. If it's competition, chances are it will do the job nicely, there are tons of A/B class amps, *cough*SONY*cough*, that don't do ****. Remember, garbage in / garbage out....so put good power into your subs.
- Pick a good subwoofer that is rated properly as well and can handle 2 ohms or less.
- run a ported box for more bass out of a small subwoofer or sealed for more life out of a larger woofer
- do research on acoustics like I said. That should take a few hours alone.
* I realize I may be wrong about some of my points, I'm learning as I go too.

i have a jbl 12'' with a pioneer amp putting out 350 or 400 rms im not sure. i listen to alot of rap though along with other stuff so a 10'' should work fine for you. i really wouldnt worry at all about sagging. id recommend a jbl or pioneer sub

Re: How big a system?
i've got a single 12" KICKER comp running off 180w RMS and it's more than i need. circuit city runs sales every now and then on kickers, buy one get one free. so i bought 2 12" kickers for $100. they're awesome.
