1999 Civic DX - removing rear drums

Problem:
1999 Civic DX with 192,000 km.
Rear brake shoes worn out. Parking brake would occasionally jam on (left rear wheel).
Rear brake drums difficult (impossible) to remove without excessive force. The problem was a ridge of accumulated corrosion inside the drum, inboard of the brake shoes.
There does not appear to be any easy way to back off the self-adjusters through the access hole in the backing plate. The access hole does not align with the adjuster.
Solution:
Using two 8 mm bolts in the threaded holes in the drum, the drum could be forced far enough to pass a hacksaw blade between the drum and back-plate. The shoe retaining pins were then carefully cut to allow the shoes to move further away from the back plate. The drum could then be easily removed. Nothing else was damaged in the process.
Self-adjusters were cleaned/lubed, new shoes installed with spring kit that included new retaining pins.
Braking surface of the drums was in perfect condition so the rust ridge was removed with a grinder and drums reinstalled.
Result:
Service and parking brakes now working well.
