98 LS B18 timing belt failure

Well, timing belt went at around 1500 rpm, didnt snap but the teeth were stripped at the crank. Cams stayed lined up, just that the bottom end is free-wheelin like tryin to start something w/ all 4 plugs out. Didnt hear ANY noise when this went down, car just sounded like I shut the key off. I know its an interference motor, just wondering if maybe I got lucky n didnt **** anything up. I expect the worse as usual, just lookin for suggestions, or past experiences. Thamks for the help.

Re: 98 LS B18 timing belt failure

i had the same thing happen. belt teeth ripped off around the crank at about 1000 rpm.
The only way...(without taking your head off) to tell if you have bent valves is to replace the belt and do a compression test.

I know its an interference engine but you may have got lucky like i did. No bent valves!!

While you are changing it replace the water pump and idle tensioner!!

Im hoping I get lucky, I was told by a buddy of mine that im probably all set because its a non v-tec. As far as the water pump and tensioner, I'll definately be doing both cuz either one would go within a month of doin the belt with my luck LOL If it dont work out I guess I'll try to source the parts for a LS/V-tec head swap

Re: 98 LS B18 timing belt failure

doesnt matter if its a v-tec or not....i have a v-tec and no problems.

its just luck.

remember you will have to re-time the cam. When you are doing this make sure all your pistons are about mid-stroke so you dont crush any valves that might be off thier seats.
