New N/A Dyno stage 3 120hp 118tq

So I went up to Jeff Evans yesterday to get a retune on the new motor and find out what the stage 3 could actually do. Turns out the stage 3 is just too big of a cam there is not enough static compression to support it basically it needs either high comp pistons or boost to support the cam. It runs ridiculously smooth though. And I'm getting like 40 miles to the gallon on this new tune.

If I get a warm streak one weekend I will pop the stage 2 back in to see how it does the last time I had the stage 2 in it supposedly did 144 (i did see one chart on the computer that said 127 hp w/ matching torque) on a messed up map and shitty leaky exhaust and no intake mani. the stage 2 with the setup that I have I should break 150 without too much trouble.

the Intake side and the exhaust side breathe perfectly and there is no restrictions at those two points but the wall comes down on the cam and pistons.

Could you post your full build list in here (intake, exhaust, motor, trans).

Glad to see you got a run in on the dyno and got some solid numbers to look at.

I have a few questions:
Is this regular or premium fuel?
What were the conditions of the dyno- temp/humidity?
Thats pretty amazing if your getting 40mpg. Is that all highway in optimial conditions (no electrics-sub,fogs; and no defroster)?

Lol nice...you built a civic that rivals the hybrid.....in fuel economy. j/k. Hope that stage2 goes better.

JDM Fabtech Intake Mani
Crower Stage 3 Cam
Crower Valve Springs
DC Sports 4-2-1 Full Race Header
ARP rod bolts
Morso Oil Accumulator
K-Pro w/ cam gear

I'm running 93 octane but that is because of my ignition timing. I could run regular with out a real problem cause it's still stock compression.

It was dry and cold out in the shop though it was probably like 70 degrees? I don't know it was roasting hot so I wasn't loosing any real power.

the 40 is on the highway with the stero cranked lol i'm running like 17.4 17.6 air to fuel ratio when cruising and when I step on it it drops to like 13.1

In the city is like 35-36 if I am pushing it all the way it will drop to 28

 I know right

that stage 2 should be nice since I actually have a clean map already set up and ready for it.

Whoa that mileage is crazy...those are some high afr's. I'm sure they're safe with stock mileage...and nice tune by the way, I keep seeing/hear nothing but good from Jeff. If I ever get my tune refreshed, I think I'll be going to him.

Thanks! yeah everything good you hear about jeff is probably true lol He is magical with tuning definitely best tuner I have ever come across he knows his stuff. Andyman97's car before he started parting out was getting the same mileage as long as he wasn't in full boost. Jeff is definitely worth it for retune it was $150 an hour it only took him one hour with me he made the car smoother gained like 8 to 10 hp and tq over the whole entire power band and got me better gas mileage. Most places will charge you 80 to 120 just to get pulls on a dyno to see were your at and any part that is going toget you 8 to 10 extra hp is probably going to cost over 150 so to me it is worth every penny and he is saving me lots of money on gas.

why not put the high comp pistons in there and see what kinda of power you can really make?

Sup man, glad you got everything running good again. You make me want to drop in a cam again. Stock cam sucks after having the stage 2 but its nice have a smooth idle again. Maybe ill get a stage 1 and call it a day.

I will eventually I have an engine on a stand waiting for some high comp pistons and new bearings for it but money is a little tight right the moment, first gear in my trans has a mind of it's own (so I might have to do something about that), and I have another project a very big project that I am working on for the vic right the moment.

thanks man my idle is soo smooth the car feels like stock k-pro man thats where it's at.

how much did that JDM Fabtech Intake Manifold cost you?

The quote I got from Gary of JDM Fabtech was 1000$. Keep in mind that these are made to order so there will be some downtime waiting for it. Well worth it though.

I got a brand new stage 2 in box. I think I'm going to go with a stage 3 instead. Get at me if you'r looking for a stage2.

Sorry for my plug!

I'm looking for a mild tune so I wouldn't mind taking that Stage 2 off you hands Triz.

It retails for $1200 it is probably worth $1400 with the quality of the welds and the amount of work done

I'm going to switch the stage 2 cam take it back up to jeff to see what the car will do. Without the intake manifold it should hit around 140hp to 149hp with it, it should be even higher. I would like to get number's just to support the Intake mani.

I hope you do get better numbers with the stage 2's. With all the work and money you spent, those numbers are pretty darn low. You're getting even less at the wheels.

All the work and money you spent is just not justified with those really low numbers.

good luck with the stage 2s. looking forward to seeing higher numbers soon

i think stage3 is just too much.

TRIZ 12-05-2008 03:52 PM

Re: New N/A Dyno stage 3 120hp 118tq

Whats your basis for thinking that its just too much?

Yeah its the last stage for our cars on the crower line, but really... if you have the right tune then it'll be smooth like the stock cam just idleing a little higher, but when you get on it, you'll have more power. I dont think thats too much for our cars- I think there isnt enough power in our cars to begin with, thats why we tune them.

bomerman19 12-06-2008 11:58 AM

Re: New N/A Dyno stage 3 120hp 118tq

I think the stage 3 is a little big for the car it does run nice and smooth and it idles at 900 rpm and I think it would be a great cam to start with if down the line you decided to up the compression.

I really do like this cam with the drive-ablity. it has a big fat nice smooth power band were the stage 2 on my car was just straight up viscous. Mind you I was running a shitty map but I think gerry's intake manifold just made it a lot more powerful and in turn made it feel as tough as it did. I will say this about the stage 2 cam depending on were I set the vtec point; when I hit vtec it usually was pretty hard, harder than my 99 prelude that has real vtec not eco vtec. It was actually painful on some accounts.

So when I get a chance I will drop the stage 2 cam in to see how it does and what it feels like. I think it will break 150 but will see.

Re: New N/A Dyno stage 3 120hp 118tq

my whole reasoning is that you start to mess with the powerband and after a point the car makes all of its power above 5k rpms. you still need to strike a balance for daily driving. building NA is totally different than building for turbo. you cant just carve out huge head ports, run a 3 inch exhaust, etc. the engine just wont work right.

Yes And this is why it is so tricky to squeeze the most out of a car that is N/A but luckily I have a lot of power down low in the bottom the powerband so it is actually a really easy car to drive on the street. I am also not surprised that I have taken a step backwards in my power. But it actually helps me a lot cause it answers a lot of questions that nobody else could help me out with about how the engine breathes. So it'll get there it just going to take some time.
