03-05 Gauges? pshhh

Got my gauges done recently. Thanks to Gearbox for an awesome job on the LED's!

I kinda wanted to do an 03-05 gauge swap but figured it was too much trouble. went with this set up instead and im loving it.

heres some pix, my camera sux tho...

That looks pretty hot. I am in the process of using EL Wire to illuminate behind my gauges. I had run all the wires but then for some reason the EL wire crapped out. I emailed the company I bought the wire from and haven't gotten a response. Is that just plain old LEDs or EL Wire?

gearbox 06-04-2006 10:42 PM

^thats the very first thing i did, but EL is just not reliable. it has a short lifespan and gets dim over time, assuming the inverter doesnt crap out. same happened to mine and i finally had enough and got an 04 coupe cluster. But LEDs are so much brighter and lasts alot longer.

glad you like it, the rings look sweet too. and man i didnt realize it would be so bright in the car lolz. edit, if you want you can get an led bulb that fits the odometer light. its just a twist socket and they should have a small led replacement bulb in blue either superbrightleds.com or autolumination.com

xbeebop 06-04-2006 10:43 PM

wow. looks good.

civic_newbie 06-04-2006 10:55 PM

Looking good...can I ask where u got the silver rings from?

gearbox 06-04-2006 10:56 PM

ebay^ you can just use the rings, they have sticky backing. they are chrome btw, not silver

Sinisterdexter 06-05-2006 08:36 PM

How many LEDs are in that anyways?

gearbox 06-05-2006 08:59 PM

around 40 haha and each is 10,000 mcd. so...those needles are working fine? i always get nervous that they wont on the 01 cause of the way they changed it for 02. but i guess both years are fine.

ramcosca 06-05-2006 09:01 PM

Gbox's work is always awesome. I hope you're happy with your decision.

kingofheartz 06-05-2006 09:22 PM

yep, everything works great

So those aren't just the ones that screw into the stock slots? Gorramn it. I'm tired of my stock greenish lights. Especially after I removed the paint from the back of the gauge...

Oh, on a side note, after popping off the needles they seem a bit jump... Like the speed and the tach. Did I press them in too much?

kingofheartz 06-05-2006 10:24 PM

its actually a large board of led's wired behind it.

http://www.7thgencivic.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=254847

if ur needles seem kinda jumpy, then you prolly pressed them in way too hard or ur gauge faces need to be taped back if theyre loose and rubbing on the needles.

Sinisterdexter 06-06-2006 02:05 PM

Jeeze. Gearbox, any chance for a DIY? Atleast for the wiring? I'm crazy enough to try this... Sorta. Okay I'm not THAT crazy but I can give it a shot!

I'll try taping the gauges back also. I tried EXTRA hard the last time I took apart my gauges not to press them in too much.

lewal 06-06-2006 04:10 PM

damn that's so bright it hurts my eyes to look at that pic :-P

Sinisterdexter 06-06-2006 08:00 PM

20 LEDs... Jeeze. I had best start saving up. Or are there two leds in each of the holes?

gearbox 06-06-2006 08:20 PM

there are almost 40 actually. the diagram isnt real, just to give you an idea or how to wire them. you just add more sets of 4 and connect to power and ground. you need one led behind each number at least, one behind the tick mark between if you want. then to light the needles you want leds shining into the plastic light guides, or you can mount them just below the needles. the stock bulbs are pulled out, and new mounting holes were drilled into the light shield directly behind each number.

Sinisterdexter 06-07-2006 01:44 PM

Yeesh. I'm almost tempted to go to Honda and order those clear pieces so I don't have to take apart my cluster. Again. But I will do this project! Oh yes I will. Got any good leads on where to get the LEDs for cheap?

gearbox 06-07-2006 02:19 PM

try ebay i can usually get a 50 pack (enough for one cluster) for around $45 shipped. try and find 5mm, at least 8-10,000 mcd brightness. it just takes forever to get like a few weeks at least.

Slawek 06-07-2006 06:08 PM

talk about a nite time distraction

TheSmuggler 06-07-2006 07:42 PM

ok stupid question, but how the caricle around the gauges is blue, im assuming thats just a reflection off the chrome, and not an actual slit with slight comming through

Sinisterdexter 06-07-2006 07:46 PM

GearBox: I'm seeing a lot of 5mm 8k mcd+ led sets for between 6 and 20 shipped. Besides them being from Hong Kong can you think of anything wrong with the picture?

http://cgi.ebay.com/Blue-LED-Set-of-...QQcmdZViewItem 50 5mm 10,000mcd LEDs.

Or these... http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/50-X-...72488339QQrdZ1 50 x 5mm 13,000mcd. Those looks kosher enough to use?

gearbox 06-07-2006 08:38 PM

crap wow those went waaay down in price since a few months ago. thats the same guy i bought from. the only thing with blue is they might not all match perfectly. i guess this is what happens when you have them in bulk. but the alternative is paying $5 per led from radioshack so might as well give it a try.

ahaha yea, its the reflection but it seems like its glowing. those rings are really reflective

Sinisterdexter 06-07-2006 09:26 PM

9.90 for 50 5mm 10k mcd LEDs. I'm going to swing by my local honda stealership and get a spare pair of light guard things. So I can work at my leisure. God I love this board.

gearbox 06-07-2006 09:44 PM

um, no. they only sell the entire cluster, not pieces of it. but you can buy a similar one on ebay for under 100 and work on that. most of the pieces are interchangable, just make sure to get the right trans type so it fits (auto/manual)

Sinisterdexter 06-07-2006 10:11 PM

That sucks. So far that's the only part I've run into that they don't sell individual parts for. Makes no sense.

Edit: I'm tempted to check out a few local junk yards. See if I can get one salvaged. Alls I need is the clear pieces...
