TYC vs STOCK Headlights <Once and for all!>

This is a comparison of halogen reflector housing vs black housing tyc projector headlights. Both tests were performed on a dry, dark night at the same spot of road with clean headlight cover. Bulbs used in stock headlights were H4 clear +50 bulbs. The tyc used H1 +50 bulbs also with clear lens.

Now before we begin, I have an upgraded wire harness that connects directly to the headlight bulbs to supply a constant 14.4v at all times. The tyc is at a disadvantage here because their conversion harness is made with much thinner wire. So take that into consideration.

Now as you can tell from the pics, the projectors have a W light pattern with some ghost areas where there is no light. I am thinking this is just a side effect of having projectors. Also, the projectors put light down much closer to the front of the car. fog lights would be useless in this case.

Well onto the pics. I will let you decide for yourself. Comments welcome. Oh yes the last two pics show a stock bmw with HID projectors passing me. Overall I am very happy with these and have no plans to put stock back. I will get used to the pattern I'm guessing. Stock just has a bigger lit area.

OKAY! These first two pics were taken using the stock reflectors. As you can see, the light is very spread out and looks pretty even all around.

NOW take a look at the tyc beam and judge for yourself!

How about some color shots. remember, stock clear bulbs here only, but they look pretty bright like MTEC on the road?? whats going on lol? look at the parking lot shot.

and finally some action shots with a bmw next to me on the left for comparison. looks pretty similar?

well nice to see the comparison shots I've had mine now for two years I guess I just want a cleaner look to my care but I still love them

rjngo 03-10-2006 07:56 PM

i like the stock one better

sp3cialk 03-10-2006 07:57 PM

Just what I needed. I was debating getting those projectors for a while.

03hce 03-10-2006 07:57 PM

I like the TYC ones better... they just look better IMO. Halo's are even tighter.

my1vtec 03-10-2006 07:59 PM

Nice. so you like the tyc's better i take it?

gearbox 03-10-2006 08:01 PM

the light output on the tyc is MUCH whiter on the ground even with the clear bulbs. I was passing regular halogen reflector cars on the road and it looked like i had hyper whites in there.

djrabbi 03-10-2006 08:11 PM

ithink the TYC looks better but is it me or they are just hittin one spott

gearbox 03-10-2006 08:14 PM

ya the tyc puts out alot of middle and side light. but there are spots that are missing light. is there anyway top fix it or is it just a thing with their design?

dp_yz713 03-10-2006 11:24 PM

cool. maybe you could turn the both in towards the middle of the car and have them like almost cross over then all the light would be concentrated in the middle. prolly wouldnt work but it was the first thing i thought of lol

gearbox 03-10-2006 11:39 PM

well one light was pretty much aimed perfect, the other one i had to turn it all the way to the middle cause it was pointing way to the right. well after turning it as much as i could and hearing something click or break inside, i stopped lol but it was lined up pretty well.

does anyone else have ground pics to compare with?

juzthewy 03-10-2006 11:55 PM

retrofit or ban

dp_yz713 03-11-2006 12:30 AM

oh well dont crank it in anymore lol. i am pissed because the pivot point on one of mine broke. the little plastic clip that sits on the head of the screaw that you can turn. well it broke and now the projecotr itself bounces when i hit bumps :hithead:

gearbox 03-11-2006 12:36 AM

ya they look good but after examining them they are very cheaply made. the two mounting tabs on mine broke. one of em is holding with epoxy but the side mount just fell off. they are still in place for now tho.

ragingSPAM 03-11-2006 12:36 AM

a nice valeo retrofit would completment the projetors very well

dp_yz713 03-11-2006 12:47 AM

yah i put superglue and epoxy and it still broke while trying to adjust. oh well i will just wait till the retro. in the TYC do you have to drill to put Valoes? or will it mount on the same mounting points?

gearbox 03-11-2006 01:03 AM

i think they use the same mounting points. just need washer nuts or something. i'm too lazy to mess with a retrofit, and the halogen is good enough for me.

D5cIvIc 03-21-2006 12:43 AM

the stock housings look better. Your TYC are too narrow and don't spread out as much. STOCK housings imo. Then again, that pic of yoru stock housing is with some HIDS though

gearbox 03-21-2006 01:05 AM

no all pics are with stock clear halogen bulbs if you read the top. i'm happy with the output, even tho there are some spots missing, i would never go back to reflector housing. projectors look so much better and the light is whiter too. and actually the tyc lights up the sides of the road more than stock does. looks like i have fogs on with the tyc compared to stock housing.

aki 03-21-2006 01:32 AM

Stocks give better lighting--the projectors have some obvious holes in vision. Short of a retrofit I think sticking with the stock lights is better.

dru106 03-21-2006 02:15 AM

Im sorry but those TYC's are no good. I bet after a month using these your gonna get tired of em and return back to stock. The beam pattern on those TYC are exactly what i had when I got the angel eye projectors years ago but the TYC is just a tad bit brighter. When I installed my OEM headlights back on I was amazed how even and clear the light output is!!! I just hope you go back to OEM!!!

SAME HERE!!!!

gearbox 03-21-2006 09:12 AM

well i was planning on getting them just for a retrofit, but the light output wasn't nearly as bad as everyone says. So now it looks like no retrofit unless they break or something. There is more light on the ground with the tyc and whiter too. it just has a different pattern.

dp_yz713 03-21-2006 10:43 AM

i think they look great. i never got around to putting mines back on to take pics of the crapy ebay patter, but i just got my Osram +50% in :) so i cant wait

gearbox 03-21-2006 11:11 AM

those osram bulbs own

Em2onCPRs 03-21-2006 12:25 PM

stock is better..

EŽik 03-21-2006 02:49 PM

Thanks for posting those pics Gearbox, I'm getting TYC's in the next couple weeks. I just don't know if I should get the chrome or black housing ones. :)

dp_yz713 03-21-2006 03:18 PM

black. chrome looks cheap imo

gearbox 03-21-2006 03:39 PM

yea chrome is tacky. black looks very good.

EŽik 03-21-2006 03:44 PM

Awsome thanks again guys. Hopefully I'll have them by the end of the month! Next on the agenda. HID retrofit.
