19" wheels... will they mess up your tranny?

Hey, i was wondering if 19" wheels with a 225/35 tire would mess up my tranny because i had 20's with a 225/35 tire and i don't know if it was the weight or the size but the tranny just gave out on me yesterday. They are 60lbs. a rim so i could be the weight but i found a good deal on some 19's. Let me know because i'm really intrested.

jeffsta17 12-18-2005 08:54 AM

60lbs per rim?!?!?!?!?! it was definatly the weight! Was it solid Iron wheels? damn lol

kronickz 12-18-2005 09:02 AM

so 19's will be fine? i really want them but then again, there are these other 18's that i like but 19's are really big!

diskreet 12-18-2005 09:14 AM

how could 19s be 60 lbs a wheel? I would never put any wheel on a civic over 20 lbs.

kronickz 12-18-2005 09:16 AM

the 20's = 60lbs. , 19's = 22lbs.

diskreet 12-18-2005 09:28 AM

oh well that sounds alot better. Alot of members have 19s here.
So anyway:
1. This thread is actually in the wrong section. There is a wheel, tire, and brake section that this should have been posted in. its ok though, a mod will move it.
2. You are going to have to search, or when this gets moved someone with experience in that size will let you know.
3. Please tell me they aren't chrome! lol

Putting a 20" wheel on a civic is stupid in the first place. Also alot of people never think to upgrade the brakes too to help with that wheel.

How is everyone putting such huge wheels on there vics? At discount tire they said nothing more than an 18 would fit.

drew22mader 12-18-2005 12:24 PM

20's will fit, but they are gonna be close, 19's will fit no problem.

Thats ok most people upgrade the brakes, and all they get is alot more time before brake fade. Almost no one ever actually buys STRONGER brakes.

i dont think the size of wheels has anything to do with how the transmission shifts

heavier wheels require more torque to turn, and if they get really heavy they cause a huge strain on the transmission. thats the oversimplified version of what happened.

02VicWilDcaRd 12-19-2005 09:14 AM

Its been mentioned that after lowering your car and adding wheels, people with automatic transmissions have noticed problems with their tranny...

HonCivX02 12-21-2005 03:25 PM

the odds of it occuring are very rare. You would have to have some heavy wheels for that to happen but to put it simply. My heady a$$ 19's have never NEVER gave me a problem so i dont think you have much to worry about.

Sennini 12-21-2005 04:26 PM

I've got 19 inch and have no probs what so ever, but then my rims are only 7J and if i'm not mistaking my tires 205/35/19.

HonCivX02 12-25-2005 02:57 AM

What kinda rims were those that weighed 60 a piece? i gotta look those up

CivicSF 12-25-2005 03:34 AM

yes, because of those huge wheels, i'm betting that's exactly why your tranny went. math goes:

1. wheel weight x 4 (effective rotational mass per cubic pound of material in circular motion) = total rotational mass

2. stock wheels: 14 lbs x 4 = 56 lbs per wheel. 224 lbs total 4 wheels

3. insane 20"s or fukin whatever: 60 lbs x 4 = 240 lbs per wheel. 960 lbs total 4 wheels

you're using the same engine to pull over 4 times the load. a vic tranny is great for lightweight shit but not that kind of wheel. you'll burn trannies up all day long with those kinda rims. you can run up the stairs all day long if you ain't a fatass but stick a stack a books in your arms and you'll be huffin and puffin

i'll bet your acceleration sucks with those big wheels? if so, there ya go.

CivicSF 12-25-2005 03:37 AM

and that's not including the tires. jesus h christ on a lolipop stick.

AzNmiKex215 12-25-2005 08:24 AM

it wont mess it up but you will have to run a THIN ass tire like a 30 series.

With thin tires, (i had 40 series) i drove over a huge cutout in the road at about 30 mph in the dark. BENT ALL 4 LIPS on my BuddyClub Racing rims. 18" inches in the TRASH now.
