That part allows fresh air into the valve cover.

djmota 12-08-2004 02:27 PM

its part of the pcv system it lets fumes from the crank case go into the intake and get burned in the engine. Good for smog.

KalliGarri 12-08-2004 02:30 PM

still confused

PunkingCivic 12-08-2004 02:51 PM

it helps the engine breath better.
If you don't like the use a filter.

When you rev your engine too hard like over 6,000 rpms, sometimes you'll increase the crank case pressure inside the engine it usually just lets air out of the engine to keep it from exploding, sometimes you'll also get a little bit of oil come out of that tube, and a tiny bit may go into your throttle body, where the engine will burn it up. if you for instance were to cap that off at the head you would blow your engine really fast. it is very functional.

have you ever seen a leaf blower, well attach a glad bag to the blower tube and duct tape it on there, no air will come out of the blower, and it'll break.

If you just put a little breather on the engine side, and cap off the hole on the intake the car will still work, but eventually you will have a gooey mess running down the back side of your engine.

like thoes guys said, the movement of the internals of the motor creates pressure in the valve cover and head, all that does is re-circulate the air from out of the top of the motor back into it to get burned again, i suppose it helps efficency, like no air wasted, besides, it just seems like the logical choice, rather then having it just plume out into the engine bay, if you start your engine, and take that piece off and put your hand over it you will notice a difference in the way the motor sounds, also you will feel air coming out that feels like exhaust. when i put my turbo on i ran a line to the intake side of my turbo, im all about some re-circulation.

you should already have the hose on your stock air box, just reuse that same hose on the intake, lemme know when you get it.

KalliGarri 12-08-2004 07:29 PM

eyah i kno i was just curious on what its purpose was?

civic01vtec 12-08-2004 07:43 PM

omg, i can't believe some of these answers. Some are partly correct. It is part of the PCV system (Positive Crank Ventilation).

The primary purpose of the PCV system is to regulate gases that were not burned back into the intake manifold where they will later be burned. Back in the old days (mid 60's and earlier) gases were ventilated to the air through a tube. Another purpose of the PCV system is that it acts like a check valve to prevent gases from going back into the crankcase which can be ignited. Also, it helps reduce pressure inside the crankcase to prevent seals and gaskets from being pushed out which leads to oil leaks.

good read

civic01vtec has it right. Yes I know for sure

turboengnr 12-08-2004 11:46 PM

Civic01vtec was pretty dead on.

whatever you boosted guys do, dont put it to a pressure side of the turbo. Or else you will have oil everywhere inside your engine bay. Robo had it right putting it to the intake side of the turbo.

exclusive_vtec 12-09-2004 06:57 AM

good info

robo1040 12-09-2004 11:41 AM

HAHAHHAHAAH could you imagine putting plumbing it into the charge side of the turbo, HHAAH that would be like...double the boost mabey??? youd have boost above and below the combustion chamber, and a oily friggen messs

KalliGarri 12-09-2004 01:30 PM

try it and let us know how it went

_Viper_ 12-09-2004 02:46 PM
