Drilling Coilovers? 14mm to 16mm HELP!

Hey guys,

Ok soo I finally got my new coilovers, now I need to make the holes on the mount bigger from 14mm to 16mm. But heres my question. There are two holes on the mount, the top one seems to be elongated meaning instead of being circular is somewhat oval? Kinda like a venn diagram. Now the bottom one is just a circle. Do I make the bottom one a 16mm circle? and the top one a 16mm oval?

Thanks...some pictures of someone doing it would be nice.

The top one is slightly slotted so that you can adjust camber. I would take them to a shop to have them drilled out to fit 16mm bolts. You can probably do it with a dremel but I think that a shop can use a drill press. Also, try and clear coat the mount holes to prevent rust. You will probably need to drill out both holes. Measure the oval one. If it is 16mm in both directions, then youa re good to go with that hole.

Thanks Robb...I dunno any shops around here. I'll probably just use a dremel to get it down to 2mm. As for clear coat...what kind do you recommend?

Thanks for the response, I really dunno what I'd do without you guys!

Any type of clear coat, spray paint. After you are done dremeling and the bolts fit through, then give them 2-3 good coats of clear coat. Let them dry overnight and then install.

You can buy step drills, and you can buy conical drills to accurately drill the hole larger. DO NOT USE A DREMEL. A dremel is not an answer here, you need to be precise. A drill intended to enlarge a hole accurately is the way to go.

Sigh already dremeled one hole. Its slightly under 16mm....but I get what your going at boilmaker, the problem with the dremel is you can't get an acurate fit, your hand won't stay perfect soo your hole will not be perfectly round and straight. What are conical drill?

Shiet....the step drill bits are like $30 BUCKS!!!! I'm nearly broke from purchasing the coilovers...AHH!!

Hey guys where do you put your jackstands on the front of your car? I like to put it on the frame that the rear arms connect to for the back...but I dunno where for the front...

Metal drills are expensive. Not much you can do but suck it up and buy it, or find a shop that might be nice and loan it to you.

Yea they are hell expensive.... :( and I have only 10 bucks in the bank, wallet, and change combined...

Does an step drill like this work with an ordinary cordless/corded drill? http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...700916-8422263

so both holes need to be drilled or just the top oval hole?

robbclark1 05-03-2005 12:15 PM

both holes.

get a titanium coated bit to fit the 16mm and some cutting oil. use it with a power drill, then coat the hole. should cost about 5 bucks and take 2 minutes with the cutting oil.

Boggie1688 05-03-2005 04:21 PM

So this oil will keep the metal from rusting?

rickinthescv 05-03-2005 05:33 PM

NO, the oil keeps the bit from burning and makes the drilling process easier.
