5 Lug and Brake Swap Information EM2, ES1 01-05

This lug swap and brake conversion is for people still have D17 motor.
But if you want to put in a K series motor this works as well.

Parts:
-RSX Base knuckles, front
-RSX Type S Knuckes, front (use this only if you have a K swap)
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” knuckles, rear
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” Brake Caliper Rear
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” E-Brake Cable
-RSX Base or Type S Brake Lines for each Brake Caliper (by new lines)
-RSX Base or Type S Brake Caliper (check seals)
-RSX Type S Front Brake Caliper brackets.

-"I also would suggest to swap out your brake booster for RSX Type S, brake portioning valve, and Brake Master Cylinder. This is also going to require a little rewiring of your brake lines to the master cylinder."

-By new Brake pads and rotors. (You can buy brand new OEM Brakes from ACURA which will cost you the most money, or go after market which are better for harsh driving I went with EBC pad and rotors).

EBC Model numbers:
Brake Pad Part Numbers: RSX Type S

Part # Description
DP41193R EBC High Friction Upgrade And Race; Disc Pads; Rear;
DP41254R EBC High Friction Upgrade And Race; Disc Pads; Front;

DP31254C EBC Redstuff Low Dust Superstreet; Disc Pads; Front;
UD537 EBC Ultimax Pad Set; Disc Pads; Rear;
UD829 EBC Ultimax Pad Set; Disc Pads; Front;

Brake Rotor Part Numbers: RSX Type S
Part # Description
USR7127 USR EBC Sport Rotor Kit; Front; 11.8 in. Dia.; Set of Two;
USR7128 USR EBC Sport Rotor Kit; Rear; 10.2 in. Dia.; Set of Two;

-5 lug wheels 5X114.3 pattern. Stock offset of our cars are +45mm Rims must bet at least 16” and larger to fit around the RSX Type S calipers.

FAQ:

Can I use parts from new SI Coupe or Sedan 2006-2010?

-New SI coupe and sedan 06+ parts do not bolt up with out modifying your car a lot. I would not suggest buying any of these parts. Except for the rims will work.

If you have an 01-02 you must change out your lower control arms!

-rsx front lower control arms(stocks can be modified to work by using tapered washers and taking up the slack)
if you have an 03-05 you dont need to modify the front struts
if you have an 01-02 you can either get the later style struts and knuckle bolts, or you can drill out the strut holes and use larger bolts

ABS System?

-If you have ABS I would suggest taking it out. It is a headache to make it work. If you want to keep ABS you are going to need the ABS system from RSX Type S with all the sensor and cables.

Why does the 01-05 Civic w/d17 need the RSX Base Front Knuckles?

-Well the RSX type s front knuckles/hubs, and cv joints do NOT spline to the civic axles, but the civic axles do spline into the base RSX Base Knuckles/hubs. If you want to use RSX Type S brake calipers and rotors you must gab the RSX Type S brake caliper brackets off the RSX type S knuckles. (Note: if you are going to use RSX Type S Brakes you must use 16” rim or larger)

AFTER YOU DO THIS LUG SWAP AND BRAKE CONVERSION TAKE IT TO A SHOP AND GET YOUR CAR ALIGMENT!

FIRESTONE TIRE SHOPS HAVE LIFETIME ALIGMENT AS LONG AS YOU OWN THE CAR. IT IS WORTH PAYING FOR THE LIFETIME ALIGMENT!

I've found several different answers regarding the ABS system. Some say I can use my stock civic abs sensor and others say I have to change it out. Anyone have a parts list of items needed to keep abs functioning?

Also... I'm assuming that because I have an 03 Coupe don't need to modify my front lcas to fit the longer screw on the rsx balljoint?

I have an 05 Civic EX SE with the Eibach Pro-Plus Suspension Kit along with Skunk2 Lower Rear Control Arms and Cambers. I'm interested in doing this swap, but am wondering if my after market parts will still fit or not. Thanks for any input! ( :

I know this is an older thread, but has anybody used Type R parts for this swap.
I've picked up stock rear knuckles for the base RSX. I just got a deal on Type R parts (hardware, cables, control arms, etc.) I know I'll have to switch out the flanges. Any other ideas or thoughts?

Check my build thread. It will detail EVERYTHING you need to know about the type "R" swap on the civic. It definitely has its complications vs. a regular rsx swap:

Sorry to revive this thread, just a quick question.
I have a 2005 EM2, looking at doing a 5 lug conversion.

I got my hands on a complete rear setup out of a 2005 ep3, and the front knuckles as well.

I see that all threads related to this require the RSX front knuckles, but can I use the ep3 setup i just got?

Thanks for any help

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

Uhmmm.... Yes you can the reason most people use RSX stuff is because EP3s are a lot more rare. Actually the EP3 conversion is a better fit because the ebrake cables work better and a few other things ;)

Engineer4civic 10-29-2013 10:58 PM

As for the fronts, can I use ep3 knuckles?
And I know the ep3 have a different p/n for the front lower control arm, but does it need to be changed, or can I stick with the stock ones?
I know the em2 and ep3 use the same ball joint, so would I have the issue that everybody talks about with the tapered washers?

BlueEM2 10-30-2013 09:36 PM

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

I'm almost certain EP3 knuckles are fine. Not sure why the lower control arms would be different part #s.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

Only one way to find out...trial and error. I used DC5 knuckles with my 03 Ex and everything seated just fine.

I will add that it wouldn't hurt to put in new ball joints while you're at it because it'll save you some time and money down the road.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

When I did mine I replaced all the wear items. It only made sense since I was there and you can get those parts for relatively cheap compared to aligning it every time something wears out.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

Thanks guys. trial and error it is. Going to get the setup off the car this weekend.
And yes, i am planning on replacing the wear items while it is all apart - only makes the most sense i agree.

we'll see how it goes.
now have to find some e-brake cables, the ones on the donor are cut

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

My buddies car is a parts car he has a dc5 and was just wondering can't you just do the knuckle swaps instead of doing that brake swap to. What I'm saying is can't you just use all of the knuckles (all 4) from the dc5 and not do the brake part of it?

BlueEM2 05-07-2014 05:51 PM

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

You will run into problems with this.

I'm not sure if the DC5 ever came with rear drums. (don't think it did tho)
If it did not then the hub on the DC5 will not be compatible with the civic drums.

However. The fronts would be swappable. You would need to find Base RSX knuckles and your OEM calipers would work. You would just need to buy 5 lug discs.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

Sweet, just to clarify this is without the main calipers

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

I used my civic calipers for a while when I did my 5 lug conversion. Then when I got type "S" calipers I Just bought new rotors and everything fit together exactly the same. After youve got the 5 lug swap its just a matter of buying calipers + rotors and your set. Oh pads too of course.

Thank You, I pulled the front knuckles off couple days ago. Im now looking for a Ep3 parts car that has drums in rears so I can get those too. hopefully its not going too cost me an arm and leg. I spent 0$ on the front two.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

Converting to rear disc and going to EP3 rear drum setup is pretty much the exact same job. The only difference is E brake cables and brake lines. If I were you I'd bite the bullet and upgrade to rear disc. Also the parts should be much easier to find. After the job is complete make sure you get a proper 4 wheel alignment done.

EDIT: Also. I'm not 100% sure but I thought the EP3 with the rear drums was a 4 lug setup. Might wanna research this.

Total noob guy here and I have a few questions regarding this swap.

I want to do the 5 lug conversion on my 2004 Honda Civic EX and a K20a2 swap on my car.

1. Should I swap the engine first before the lug conversion?
2. If I do the engine first then according to this guide I will need the items below correct?
-RSX Type S Knuckes, front (use this only if you have a K swap)
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” knuckles, rear
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” Brake Caliper Rear
-RSX Base or Type S / SI hatchback 04-05 “EP3” E-Brake Cable
-RSX Base or Type S Brake Lines for each Brake Caliper (by new lines)
-RSX Base or Type S Brake Caliper (check seals)
-RSX Type S Front Brake Caliper brackets.

Re: 5 lug and brake swap information em2, es1 01-05

If you do a K swap you will have to use K series axles, you will have two options.
-Axles from an '02-'05 EP3 or base model RSX can be used if keeping your current four lug setup and also if you're using five lug knuckles from an '04-'05 EP3 only. This would allow you to do the K swap first then worry about the five lug swap later on.
-Axles from an RSX Type S, must then use five lug knuckles from an RSX Type S as well.

Got is so no matter what if I did the swap I'm gonna have to change the knuckle regardless. Can't keep stock.
