Sidewall on steel wheels

Ok, so I searched and couldn't find anything so here's my question, Im running the steel wheels on my 2001 civic the oem tire is 185/65-15, can i go lower on the sidewall? how does this work on a steelies compared to an aftermarket rim, sorry if this a silly question lol. Thanks ^__^

Re: Sidewall on steel wheels

Yea you can go with a lower profile. It works the same as on aftermarket wheels. The reason that you decrease the sidewall is to maintain the factory rolling diameter. If you go from a 15 inch rim to a 17 inch rim you now need less sidewall to maintain the same rolling distance of the tire so that it does not throw your speedo off. By decreasing the sidewall on the stock wheels you will throw off your speedo.

Here is tire calculator tool to tell you how much it will be off:

If you go keep the same rim size (15") and have a smaller sidewall (like running a 185/55-15) your speedo will be thrown off. It will show that you're speed is faster than what it really is.*
