Problem with screws in shift knob!

1999 CIVIC...the 2 screws were missing from shift knob, so I bought them from Honda. Saw video on YouTube on how to fix. The button, spring, and white nylon bushing over the angled metal rod seem fine, nothing in there is broken. When I put them in, either in Park or all the way back down into position 2, I have to push a tiny bit down on the shift to make screws align with holes, then it shifts fine back into Park, BUT then LOCKS and button won't release and allow me to pull out ignition key. The only way it works is the way it was...with the locking screws out.

What is the problem? Could the spring have lost tension and need new one? Appreciate your expert help, thanks!

Re: Problem with screws in shift knob!

We're talking about an automatic shifter right?

I'm not sure if/where there is a shift lock overide button on the 1999, but there is one on the 2001-05.

It's a small 1/2" x1/4" rectangular plug located on the base of the shifter assembly. You remove the cover and use a small tool like your car keys or screw driver to push it down.
