Hey all.

2001 Civic Lx.

I crashed her last winter, it's been a long journey of repair since.

I been having trouble with it throwing a P0336 crank sensor code. I've tried so many things, and can't get it cleared.

-Replaced the sensor (not OEM), still getting code. I check the sensor w/ a voltmeter, it seems to work fine.
-replaced timing belt, tensioner etc. etc.
-the timing marks line up.

---> It could be a worn Key-way on the crank/sensor plate. There is a little bit of wiggle there.

I'm thinking about paying a mechanic to use their fancy car-computer to read the sinewaves from the sensor and narrow the issue down.
OR buy the cheapest fancy computer and do it myself.

I'm about to buy a 2011 Ford Fusion (yeah I know). So maybe a fancy car computer wouldn't be a bad idea??

I'm really short on cash these days, and I spent a lot of money trying to fix this Civic.
Should I call the scrap yard? or have a mechanic look at it w/ a nice computer?
Or buy a good computer?

I guess what I am really here asking, is what is the cheapest computer I can get that will let me read this stuff??

Nothing wrong with buying a fusion. They’re excellent cars.

Non-OEM sensors just don’t work well with Honda, regardless of if it’s “working” or not. Won’t be your key way. Had to replace mine on my old integra but it never threw any codes.

Take it to a shop. Reading it will cost you basically nothing.

For the record.

I cleaned the battery terminals - and put in a OEM sensor, as opposed the cheap aftermarket one i bought.

AND SHE WORKS AGAIN!
