2004 Honda Civic ignition cylinder problem

I have a 2004 Civic that was getting progressively harder to turn the key. I had to jiggle and wiggle it but eventually it would turn and I could start it. Today I could not get it at all and I had to kind of force the key in but it will not turn the ignition at all.

I am looking to replace the cylinder and have been doing research only to find that no one seems to have just the cylinder. I am finding the whole ignition assembly but it is about $400.

Does anyone know where I can order just the cylinder and a new key that matches? I don't mind having to open with one key and start with another. The car is stuck at work, I cannot get it to turn to even the first position. I am sure I broke something trying to force it the rest of the way in.

Thanks for any help.

Rob

You would have to obtain a complete working set from a car that matches your year/engine/trans:

Ignition/steering lock with keys and immobilizer control unit (that's the black electronic ring around the cylinder), and the PCM.

AND the used lock set can still have the same problem you already have real soon, so be ready if it happens.

If you can get the column lock assembly off of the column without damaging anything, a competent dealer tech should be able to retumble it so your key works again.

I'd guess the cost would be a lot cheaper than towing plus having them do the job from start to finish since you'd carry in the lock and that's all they would have to do.

(assuming the key isn't completely worn out, some do get that way and need replaced as part of the job....If it needs a new key, the price goes up of course.)

I wonder if it's worthwhile offering to fix the lock for you via UPS?

Thanks for the help ezone. I was able to get it out and the dealer has fixed it. Do you happen to know which green plug (there are two) goes to the ignition assembly and which to the immobilizer? I was not paying attention when I disconnected them.

Thanks again for your help.

They only plug in one way.
You can't get it wrong.
