Vibration: 35-40mph, 1700-2000 RPM HELP! Civic Experts, Recently I backed down a gravel driveway and ended up bottoming out the chassis but only on the driver side (front and rear). About 5,000 miles later (this week), probably unrelated, I started to get a vibration. I mention the earlier incident to see if that would spark any strut comments. Could this be the Strut? Transmission? Converter? Anything helps. Rotated and balanced tires twice since incident and the later rotation and balance was right after I noticed these symptoms... Symptoms: :help: Between 35-40 mph, vibration or shudder (seems to be left-front) @ about 1700-2000 RPM (tach bounces between 1900 and 2000) Acceleration or letting off the gas makes it go away. No vibration during braking, perfect alignment... Replaced Sway Bar, inspected struts, inspected CV joints, replaced axle driver side, and balanced and rotated tires and problem is still there! PLEASE, if you have any ideas or comments do share. I am lost. :russian: If it is the transmission, how much does it cost to rebuild and how much does it cost to replace? 2004 Honda Civic EX A/T with 97,500 miles. |

Could it be that they didnt use OEM Honda ATF and whatever they put in is not working well with it? Anyone ever have any issues with ATF and this 04 A/T? Any info helps! |
Re: Vibration: 35-40mph, 1700-2000 RPM HELP! the atfs are weak for 01-05, but some get lucky. the only fluid you should be using is honda dw1 (replaces z1) or valvoline maxlife dex/merc (without the stop leak additive). if you put the wrong fluid, just drain and fill a few times with the new stuff. |
Re: Vibration: 35-40mph, 1700-2000 RPM HELP! Just to follow up: I went to the Honda Dealership and they suggested I put in a new transmission (at a low cost of $3,600 haha). I explained to them that I had a flush in May (now Sept) and that I fear the fluid isnt Honda OEM. They flushed the transmission and the TC and included an additive. The car runs fine and has for 3 weeks (about 2,500 miles). If anything changes, I will let you know. Lesson... If it isnt broke, dont fix it. AND only use Honda OEM ATF. You mentioned that 01-05 A/Ts are crap. I got a letter from the dealer offering me $7,000 for my car. KBB says $7,500 (for Excellent Condition) Details: 2004 Honda Civic EX (Auto) -103,000 -All 90k maintanance performed -New Brakes -Tires @ 40% -No mechanical issues -Clear Title -Sunroof -All electronics work -A/C is COLD Do you recomend I dump this 7th gen due the POS A/T? If I trade it in, what generation / model do you recommend. I love my civic but I do not want to be a sucker when the transmission goes at 110k. I value your opinion. I read where you mention an 85% failure rate. :) Thank you for your time. |

In other words, do I want to be in debt again? Personally for me, if the car's in good enough condition (meaning it runs without major issues) then I'm gonna milk it. Even if it breaks down it's cheaper to spend $1000 for a rebuild than it is to spend $15-20K for a new car. And in the mean time I'm gonna save my money for a rainy day (house, possibly another car, motorcycle..haha, x-mas gift to myself, etc.). Car's a car....gets you from point A to point B. I would only buy if the car got stolen or totaled in an accident. That's just my take on it. |

No, I do not want my insurance to go up (I am under 25 yr old) and of course I do not want a payment. But, the offer on the table is pretty good and I only paid $9k for it when it had 62k on it. You have definitely put things into perspective. My only concern with the car is the A/T. When the transmission goes, will it really only cost $1,000 to rebuild? My main concern is that if the transmission goes...my car will instantly loose value and I will have to buy a car quickly (without the luxury of shopping around). I guess I was really just wanting to know how risky it is to hang on to this '04 EX Coupe. Mostly highway miles... What style of driving is toughest on a transmission? I love the car. I love the style, the ride, the mpg and it has a relatively low ownership cost. It wont really need any maintenance for at least another 25-35k. Tires have 40k on them but still are good to go for the winter.:rockon: I have the opportunity (pretty good trade value) and I just wanted to do my research before I take it or pass it up. Re: Vibration: 35-40mph, 1700-2000 RPM HELP! if the trans is not slipping from a cold start, then you will be fine for a long time. even slipping does not mean it will die right away. highway driving is very easy on the trans. city driving where the gears constantly switch is borderline abusive. every shift builds more heat, and the hotter it gets, the more deposits start to form and the fluid gets degraded faster. try to shift into neutral when you are stopped at a light so the trans can cool off a bit. |

I have a 2003 Civic EX sedan AT 109k. I was getting a random (sometimes only a few times a day) issue where the front end was suddenly vibrating, or shuddering, sort of like when you roll over a cattle guard or really bad washboard road. It had no trigger, but mostly happened when the car was in 4th gear, around 1800 -2000rpm and just cruising around 35-40mpg (typical in town driving). I checked and rotated the tires, had the front struts replaced, had a mechanic look at it for 2 days, nothing. I did a valve adjustment, this helped with a slight hesitation feeling I was getting, but didnt fix the shudder. Last thing I did, was have the transmission flushed with Honda compliant fluid and replaced with the same Honda compliant fluid. As the days went by the issue was less and less frequent. After 1 week the shudder issue was gone. It's been 1 month now and I haven't had the issue since. So my guess is bad or wrong tranny fluid was in there. Here is an update on my car @ ~16,000 miles after issue! Update (May '12): Car now has 113,000 miles and I have had no transmission issues!!!!! I had the dealer contact me again trying to buy the car for $6,800 (trade or cash). I have been lucky with the O2 sensor and the alternator so far... VTEC solenoid sensor seems to be a common issue from what I have read. I am aiming for 300k so any tips would be appreciated! |

Every time starting from and putting gas on pedal the car really sttuters/vibrates and makes an awfulugly noise nobody would wanna hear. Itdoes that and takes off and then no problem. Only happens when you are at stop sign and giving gas to the car.The noise seems like two metals crashing/rubbing/scratching noise with each other when putting legs on pedal to give gas. Is this a Solenoid Problem? Solenoid Switches Is this a slipping/ torque converter/clutch issue Is the computer reading it all wrong. Possibly a bad computer that controls the transmission. Would having a trans flush with OEM Honda Fluid do any better!!!!.. I have seen others have success with using OEM HONDA fluids and having a flush on this thread. I am just skeptical!!!!!!!...some old theories/ beliefs just dont die!!!!!..i have been taught to not have a flush/fluid change for TRANSMISSIONS ONLY. tHIS HAS STUCK WITH ME FOREVER. What do you think. Should i Have a trans fluid flush for my transmission. Its an auto transmission with 175k rebuilt just 15,000 miles ago with many major new parts like Torque Converter,h owever, it was not done at a dealership but with a mechanic and 12,000 mi warranty was the most. All problems happened starting at 15,000 mi after rebuilt. What do you suggest i do gearbox. I value your opinion.
