Honda is Covering my 2002 AT 100%

Read my thread 2002 Automatic Transmission Problems HELP! Just got off the phone with Honda and they are completely covering the cost of a new trans for my car. Parts and labor! I can't believe it! Be loyal to Honda and in return they will do good by you!

We're all happy for you, but what about everyone else that Honda has shafted with this problem? To them, that statment is B.S. plain and simple. I've been loyal to Honda and ended up with a POS. Mine was outside of warranty, had 135,000 miles. Serviced at normal intervals and had 95% highway miles. My return from Honda was a tranny that had premature failure. Though, I traded it off before it actually died.

I guess it's all in how you go about trying to come together to an agreement. I studied the situation VERY carefully, used selective wording and conversation. You can get anything if you go about it the right way. Honda of America called my dealership and asked my rep what do you think we should do and my reps response was "nothing short of 100%".

65Coronet440 06-23-2006 05:08 PM

Well, if transmission replacement is based on yay or nay by the Rep, getting the tranny replaced will solely depend on your dealerships stance on the problem.

Mine, obviously, denied there was even a problem. I didn't go into hound them about it at all, infact I was just there buying tranny fluid not even a service request and just brought it up in conversation.

Also, perhaps you should post up the Location and Number of your dealership so others can go there and have this fixed. Even if it was half way across the U.S. it's still cheaper than the $3600 out of pocket to fix it.

you gotta go to the right dealer.. the dealers around here are retarded and rude.. but i found a dealer that is awesome and they just replaced my struts for free cuz my warranty. anyways im happy for you that you didnt have to pay a penny!

DaddyFatSacks 06-23-2006 11:44 PM

You got 135,000 out of it and thats premature? You think you got problems buddy, theres people with alot worse problems than you.

01lude 06-24-2006 09:49 AM

I agree with big daddy. Be realalistic I bought this car brand new, 65,000 is NOTHING on a car. 135,000, its 3/4 into the ground. I would be willing to bet that at least 70% of the population get rid of their vehicles long before 135,000. In my opinion you got the most out of your car.

65Coronet440 06-24-2006 03:29 PM

I'm happy knowing you guys think your honda's are almost dead at 135,000 miles with primo maintaining but in my world that is a $hit car. My mother's 1990 Camry is 215,000 with just maintanence. My current car, 1992 Honda Accord has 185,000 and is like brand new. Just did the timing belts last month, the valve train/valve cover was clean as new.

Accord valvetrain @ 185,000 miles
http://198.237.72.28/misc/accord_head.jpg

My 2002 Civic was highway driven 95% of the time, thats right, 95% of the time the car sat at 70 mph in 4th gear. Gee, thats some tough wear. Every 3K the engine oil is changed (once a month basically), every 30K the tranny fluid is changed. All done by me. So.... in my book, thats a POS car, period.

The only reason mine lasted 135K instead of 60K is because of the way the car is driven. I live in a rural area, my town doesn't have heavy traffic, we don't even have a stop light. I just go through and get on the highway. And to boot, anytime it's much below 60, the car is warmed for about 10-15 before it even leaves my driveway.

So, again, if you think your civic is almost dead at 135,000 miles you don't expect much out of your car and thats unfortunate.

I expect my Accord to run far past 200K, and hopefully 300K without needing a motor/tranny. But, if/when the engine/tranny goes I'll just rebuild and keep going. Unlike the Civic, if I rebuild my Accord I know I'll get another 200K+ from it. By just replacing the 7th Gen civic's tranny, it will just fail prematurely again because the defect has yet to be fixed.

01lude 06-24-2006 03:54 PM

Not everyone does highway driving like you do. I understand your point of view. Im not hard on my car, I don't race it, mash the gas, the thing is pretty much pampered. I also think that as long as you take your car to the dealer and are a loyal customer and take it there every time it needs maintenance weather its an oil change, tranny flush, whatever, they will bend over backwards to help you. Thats why my rep said "replace it nothing short of 100%". Im a very loyal customer. I would say in your case if you just bought the car at the dealer and never took it in for service and then just one day out of the blue came back 135K later and was like fix this trans the car is a POS then they would be less likely to help you out. I can most deffenatly change my oil, tranny fluid ect but it is just to much on an inconvience to me, I would just rather pay Honda $25 bucks for an oil change or whatever and get a free wash to boot!:) I would also say that under normal driving conditions at 15,000 miles per year thats 9 years of driving till 135,000 and by that time, its time to start looking for a new ride because I would say the average american drives a car for 7-8 years before they start looking for a new one.

65Coronet440 06-24-2006 04:09 PM

Unlike others, I never ever tried to get Honda to replace anything on my car as a warranty job, my warranty was 36,000 miles which I went over in about 16 months or so. I did buy an ext. warranty through Warranty Gold that went to 150,000 miles but 6 months after I bought it the company they were re-selling for went bankrupt. That was nice waste of $1200 non-refundable dollars.

01lude 06-24-2006 06:41 PM

You seem a little bitter about your situation with Honda. Why wouldn't I take advantage of a defective part that Honda KNEW about in the first place? If I ragged on my car and modded it out and never took it in for scheduled maintenance then I should pay for the new trans. and would totally understand. Don't hate the player, hate the game. Your not even acknowledging any of my points of view but rather acting like there was some big conspiracy theory against you by Honda. Im not trying to rub it in anyones face, I think that everyone and anyone that has had the same problem that I had deserves the same thing, a new trans parts and labor 100% free!

gearbox 06-24-2006 07:05 PM

im still pissed at honda the dealer let me drive away in an unsafe car (bad repair job), all american honda did was send me an oil change coupon to the dealer im not going back to! btw since i joined the site, you have been the ONLY one they have paid for a whole new tranny. best after you is 1/2 payment, then everyone else that has to pay because a defect that should have been recalled.

01lude 06-24-2006 07:30 PM

Like I said don't hate the player, hate the game. When I was in the dealership today to have the oil changed in my 97 Accord, it was about an hour and a half wait I had an extensive talk with one of the salesman and told him about my whole situation and he told me that Honda does not do recalls but takes care of problems on a case by case basis. I really do think alot of it has to do with customer loyalty. I own four Honda's a 2003 Pilot a 2002 Civic, 2001 Prelude and a 1997 Accord all bought at different dealerships but none the less all taken to Honda for service whenever they needed it. If you feel so strongly about your situation why don't you call them and open up a case? I had my answer for my trans in less then an hour from the regional rep in Torrance, CA. What did you all do? Drive your cars through the dealership showroom in an agressive rage?

JohnnyLondon 06-27-2006 09:50 PM

thats friggin sweet

stock 06-29-2006 04:21 PM

Are you saying that Honda will honor a warranty only if I pay the stealership to do my maintenance? I guess you basically paid for a tranny anyways from the overpriced service you paid for.

01lude 06-29-2006 05:55 PM

Yup 23 dollar oil changes a tranny flush a radiator flush. Thats all I had done to my car. If it paid for my transmission then **** yeah its worth taking it there everytime. My time is money. I don't have the time to mess around with oil and all that other shit so I guess for those of you who got stuck paying for a trans sorry about your luck, thats the brakes heh.

JohnnyLondon 06-30-2006 05:19 PM

Why dont you just buy a sledgehammer?

01lude 07-01-2006 12:22 PM

Like I said before. Don't hate the player, hate the game son, hate the game.

7thGEN 2nv 07-05-2006 09:34 AM

01lude....how many miles before your tranny went out?

mine went out at 65,000 mi and honda covered it too at 100%.

to everyone >>> honda will cover the tranny most likely if your civic has less than 75,000 mi on it. above 75k is shaky. it also helps to have your car serviced at the dealership cuz they can track maintenance on the computer. it proves that u take care of your car! hope this helps!!!!!!

01lude 07-11-2006 09:59 PM

My trans never actually "went out" it was just slipping ever so slightly into gear. I noticed this just after it turned 65,000 miles. If Honda will cover any trans. problems then why is everyone on this site seem so bent out of shape? My opinnion is that 90% of people on this site do their own work so Honda really doesnt have record on what they do to their car. I agree with 7thGen 2NV 100%
